Juan Martin Del Potro - Nicolas Almagro (7:6 7:6)

Dolgopolov: Del Potro has played incredibly

  • Published:

Nishikori missed the opportunity to use the advantage of double break in the first set and later he hurt his back, but Almagro didn't miss such opportunity. Dolgopolov had a set and a break. Afterwards the Argentinean player raised the level of the game and the Ukrainian player admitted he didn't have any more chances

Nishikori has been fighting his way through although he announced that he would defend the title with great confidence. Realistically, he should have lost already to Melzer. After two played matches he didn't improve his play, his knee was actually giving him problems.

The Japanese player probably doesn't believe in karma but this time around he got payback for his lucky win in the first match. Although he had 4:1 with the double break and then he served for the match, Almagro made a comeback in that set. At the end, he has defeated him with two lost point in the tiebreak. Those missed opportunities had impact on Nishikori who started the second set with two lost games. His footwork was weaker, he was touching his knee and most of the opponents would have gone for the long  points. That wasn't the case with Almagro. The Spanish was shooting as if he had Nadal on the other side of the court and the number of non forced errors grew faster and faster. Although he was leading 4:2, he won only one more game by the end of the set.

It looked as if the Japanese player would manage to pull through one more time. Both players held onto their serve without problems till 3:3 and then Almagro started to get every point in again. Soon he won three consecutive games and he celebrated his victory over the defending champion with the crouched fist. The stadium went quiet.

- I hurt my back and at the end I barely managed to move. I think I have played well considering the circumstances, but at the end what matters is the result. Unfortunately, I have suffered from back problems and today my back didn't withstand - said the Japanese who can rarely plays two good tournaments in a row due to frequent physical problems, but Almagro has a cause to celebrate:

- Nishikori failed to take advantage of the set point in the first half and afterwards I started to play much more aggressively. I think we played a very good match and I am very happy. Obviously the sushi helps.

Del Potro had a big challenge in the first round. A difficult draw after a last arrival from a faraway Argentina. After Berlocq he seemed self confident, but the unpredictable Dolgopolov showed again his two faces. He had a set and a break, he played aggressively but the Argentinean sped up the game and he couldn't follow it anymore. He admitted it himself at the end:

- After leading 2:1 in the second set, Del Potro has raised the level of the game. He risked, he was shooting for the line and he played unbelievably. I only tried to stay in the game.

In the third set we could see why Dolgopolov has such bad results when playing Top 10 players. He stopped believing and he played poorly the most important points. Del Porto took advantage of both break-points and he saved the only  break point on his serve.

- Everything was difficult today. At the beginning he was matching me in everything. I would play a forehand and he would return it without problems. I struggled in the second set and when I finally reached the break my self confidence improved. The level of his game fell in the same manner - Del Potro said at the end of the match.

He is about to play against Almagro who is somewhat unexpectedly fighting for the finals. He wasn't fit during the past couple of months and currently he has 24 wins less than last year. Although he plays aggressively and his serve is very good, he is about to face a lot more dangerous opponent.

Almagro was rampaging in the first two rounds, but the opponents were appropriate. Then he started against Nishikori with two lost serves. Somehow he managed to get through that set and the Japanese got injured, little bit of the knee, a bit more of the back but he was basically not coming back to the middle of the court. The Spaniard somehow lost the set and then won in the third one after all, while his opponent could barely move. The quality of play that Dolgopolov and Del Potro have shown was something completely different. Both of them were in an excellent mood and the points were attractive one after the other. The Ukrainian had a set and a break, but when the Argentinian raised the game it all went in the opposite direction. Dolgopolov admitted he is powerless, which he rarely does even against the best. The Spaniard reached the semifinals through favorable circumstances and he didn't impress me. On the other hand, Del Potro had a more difficult draw and better performance. Almagro has two finals on concrete since 2008, both of them on the tournaments of Series 250 and he was losing there majorly. These are no conditions for him, this is not his season and the Argentinian is a great favorite here. The Spaniard doesn't know how to play defensively and to try and outplay Del Potro in these conditions is impossible. This is a win in two sets of the seed.
