Alexandr Dolgopolov - Janko Tipsarević (6:3 7:6)

Tipsarevic has food poisoning, pain in his knee and right wrist

  • Published:

Even though Janko had all kinds of physical problems, he managed to save all eight break points against Hanescu. It is questionable how much strength he has left for another match, but it is also questionable whether Dolgopolov can make use of his opponent's problems

As usually, Dolgopolov turned out to be unpredictable once again. The Asian tour never suited him because of his health condition. Just to remind you, the Ukranian suffers from Gilbert syndrome. It is not a very known disease that affects liver and fatigue. When it comes to a professional sport player like him, its influence can be very important. He had problems with it during training in the recent Davis Cup visit.

Dolgopolov doesn't like to talk much about it and rarely looks for an excuse following a loss. This season was not so turbulent as he mostly played bad. He got into good rhythm only recently and it seems to hold on still. Even though his opponent was Brands, who is a very good server, he easily got to his chances. He had 12 break points in the eight serve games, and took the German's serve four times. On the other hand, his short throw serve was unsolvable for the German, who had a single break opportunity.

Tipsarevic arrived to Tokyo with a lot of problems. Following the Davis Cup match, he complained of right wrist problems. Even though it wasn't a problem in the Davis Cup, his complaint came in Russia following a loss to Bautista Agut. As most players here, he has been having jet-lag-related issues. However, new problems soon followed. Even though the Romanian Hanescu seemed like an easy draw, the match took longer than expected. As a reminder, two weeks ago, Hanescu lost to an inexperienced 17-year-old, and to Pospisil last week.

Hanescu won the first set in tie break, but his poor break point conversion (0/8) cost him the win. The Serbian managed to get the win in the end. Even though he won 10 ace serves and 81% of first serve points, he complained to the reporters:

- This was one of the hardest matches in my career. I had food poisoning, I vomited for nine hours and spent three days in bed.

He spent two and a half hours on the court, which definitely is not helpful. Besides, he requested medical assistance twice in the third set. Luckily for him, he was playing against an opponent who couldn't take advantage of his problems. It is hard to say which presents a bigger problem for him at the moment. Food poisoning, knees, which had to be attended to by the physio, or the wrist he mentioned after the Davis Cup. But in spite of that, he won all 15 of his serve games against the Romanian. The only thing is that Dolgopolov will be much more dangerous. But one should be careful here. The Ukranian will play his own game, which means he will often go for the lines, even when it isn't necessary.

After winning against Hanescu, Tipsarevic complained of "his toughest match in the career." He had problems with food poisoning, he spent three days more or less in bed, but won against Hanescu. I cannot take the Romanian seriously. Two weeks ago he lost against a junior Russian player who had his ATP debut. But he did Dolgopolov a favor by keeping Janko busy for two and a half hours. I will go for the Ukrainian's win with bookies that treat retirement after first sett as a loss, or you can pick a one ball one if possible. There are more reasons for this. Food poisoning, receiving treatment for knee problems, the problem with his right wrist he complained many times before. Dolgopolov served well in the first round and he can be trusted that he familiarised himself with the court after winning a match. His form is generally on the incline. Of course, the stake is higher because of the Serbian's problems.
