Milos Raonic - Ivan Dodig (7:6 6:1)

Dodig leads 2-0, but Raonic looks unstoppable

  • Published:

The Canadian has reached the semifinal without allowing a break point and he's full of self-confidence after winning a title last week. Dodig was broken when serving for the match, but still won it in straight sets.

Although Dodig couldn't keep his serve unbroken, he was still able to win in straight sets. He was dominant against the experienced Finn, starting the match with a break. Nieminen won only one of the first six games played. It looked all over when Dodig took a 2-1 lead with a break in the second set, but his opponent made a re-break. That was the first service game the Croatian player has lost in the tournament.

Ivan failed to convert two break points at 4-4, but later he won 8 points in a row to serve for the match at 6-5. He saved three break points, but he couldn't get a match point, so the Finn eventually got the break to force a tie-break. Missed chances didn't faze Dodig, who started the tie-break with a 3-0 lead, keeping it for the rest of the 13th game. This way he reached his third semifinal of the season, interestingly, each one on a different surface.

- I'm very happy with my play - Dodig said after the win, adding:

- Jarkko played very well, pushing me in the second set. Fortunately, I served well when I needed it the most, and I'm pleased with my overall performance.

Raonic continued with his great serves, but his return also started to work in the last two matches. He didn't allow any break points in this match either, just like the previous two. He had 11 aces and won 87% of the points on his first serve. Good numbers, as usual for him, but this time he was also convincing on return. He won over 40% of the points in that segment, which is not really his standard.

Lacko held his own until 3-3, but then he lost three games in a row, two of them on his own serve. The Canadian extended the streak to six games, he got to 3-0 in the second set and kept the advantage easily for the rest of the match. The Slovak reached the quarterfinal as a lucky loser, but his luck ran out there. Raonic allowed him only one point per his service game on the average, not enough for any serious resistance.

- I found my rhythm on return from the start, so everything went fast. I played short points on purpose, I knew that will keep him out of rhythm - said Raonic, who obviously enjoys the conditions in Japan, but he's facing a tough opponent now:

- Dodig has won both of our matches, but this week I'm playing great and I have a feeling my form is improving with every match.

The Croat and the Canadian last played in Eastbourne. Raonic had then just started cooperation with Ljubicic, and he wasn't in form. He played without self-confidence, in search of his ideal game, and he lost his serve at the outset of the match. Now, the situation is completely different. His record, since the Montreal tournament, is 22-4, and he's only lost to Top 10 players and Isner, who was also in that company until recently. Of course, Dodig also has every reason to believe in winning, with his form and this week's wins.

I have a good record against Milos, so I will be hoping to just keep playing my game and give my best - Croatia's number 1 said.

The serve will certainly decide. Dodig must produce his best serves, as Raonic's serve seems unstoppable at the moment. He hasn't allowed a break point in three matches here.

You have to hand it to Dodig for this tournament. He defeated Tsonga, but the Frenchman is still not recovered fully from his knee injury. Last time Dodig and Raonic played, the Canadian was completely lost. He had just started working with Ljubicic who made him play aggressively, and he could not hit a normal backhand. Now it's a whole different story. He won a tournament last week, has a score 22-4 since Montreal and his serve is fantastic. Here he played in the finals last year, but now his playing is miles better. He still did not offer a break-ball, the conditions are very fast, and his rhythm is to attack after the first ball. He did not allow rhythm to anyone and I believe he won't to Dodig too. He is just full of confidence, which can be seen in the way he is playing this week. A small statistic that goes to show about this prognosis: Dodig played two finals this year, lost both in straight sets. In some other circumstances I would go for over on the games, but this time I am convinced that Raonic is playing the best tennis of the season.
