Gilles Simon - Marcel Granollers

Granollers not easy for Simon

  • Published:

Even though the Spaniard has not played since the US Open, and the Frenchman broke the streak of six wins last week, we might see a match with an uncertain outcome. Historically looking, Granollers might have a tactic against Simon, who won only once out of the five head-to-heads

When Simon came to the tournament in Metz, he was not in a good mood. The reason was the poor American tour. The Frenchman was very frustrated due to numerous injuries and in the end concluded by saying he should not have gone there.

- A real nightmare. My neck was stiff and I had pain all over my body. I broke two ribs, had a five-week break and then went to USA and lost in the first rounds. I lost three weeks of my life for nothing. I was a complete mental wreck. I think I did not deserve that - complained Simon, but he is aware that he has to train to get in shape for next season:

- The coach and I made a furious plan for December. He told me I'll be like Robocop. I know I'm not young anymore, but when you look at Haas and what he can do after all those surgeries, Hewitt, who comes back every time after an injury or Mahut, who won his first ATP title, it becomes clear to you that you can do better. There is always room for improvement.

Even though he did not start too optimistically that tournament, he maybe even played the best this season. He won the local Metz without a set lost. In the end he beat Tsonga too, his best compatriot. The best way possible to celebrate the birth of his son. He won two matches last week, but the streak was stopped by Berdych in an extended third set; it was close.

Granollers has not played since the US Open. He was on a deserved break, especially because he won three matches in a  row in five sets. There was a turnaround every time. Zopp had 2-1 in sets and a break, Ram had a 2-0 lead in sets, and Smyczek had a break in the fifth set. In the end, there was no stamina for Djokovic, but he can be happy with the points. He went to Barcelona, where he rested, and this is his first tournament after New York.

- I arrived on Friday to Tokyo and I can't wait for the tournament to start. I want a fight. I know I'm playing against Simon, so I have two days to practice to prepare the best I can.

Even though the draw might seem hard, the Spaniard has a tactic for Simon. He beat him four out of five times so far, even though the Frenchman was clearly the favorite. It is obvious that Granollers has a tactic, Simon once talked about it. It is hard for him to approach tactically. The Spaniard can play defensively and he is going to come to the net when short balls come, and he is good there.

Head-to-heads sometimes bear no significance, but now they are very important. Simon and Granollers are playing their sixth head-to-head and, until now, the Frenchman won only one. He was the favorite four times (odds under @ 1.3), and the last time approximately like this time. That did not help, because the Spaniard has a style which Simon does not like at all. He can play defensively, he is not afraid of long rallies, and he can go forward to hit every shorter ball, especially serves. One should certainly try to bet on Granollers, but considering their history, this bet seems excellent and worthy of a larger stake.
