Jarkko Nieminen - Ivan Dodig (2:6 6:7)

Tsonga: If Dodig continues to play like this, he could be Top 10 for sure

  • Published:

In the last round Dodig won his first match against Top 10 player this season. Although Tsonga is still recovering from the knee injury, he gave a great compliment to Ivan. Nieminen saved all eight break points against Przysiezny. The Polak won 87% of points after the first serve in first two sets...

There is no doubt that Dodig knows how to play against Tsonga. The Croat has 4 victories against Top 10 players and 2 of those are against the French. Truth to be said, Tsonga probably has the excuse for both defeats. In London he had an injured finger, and in Tokyo he was recovering from the knee injury. But, he did play in the final in Metz last week so the knee isn't really the main reason for the loss against Dodig. Everyone expected that both players will win most of the points on their own service games, and that was exactly what happened that day.

Although Dodig won his first break point in the third game of the match, that remained his only chance on the return in the whole match. On the other side, Tsonga failed to win three break-point chances in the 6th game of the second set. After that Dodig won six straight points and in the end he won the match in tie-break.

- I am still not at 100%, but I have to play matches if I am to come back to my best. My movement was not perfect and maybe I took a little longer to get into the match, but he played a good match. If he plays like that he can be Top 10 for sure - Tsonga said after the match.

It took Nieminen three sets to win against Przysiezny but his overall performance was better than the result might suggest. Przysiezny was excellent in the first set and he won in the tie-break although the Finn saved five break points. But, Nieminen remained calm, continued to play his game and won the match in the end.

After the first set Przysiezny continued to serve good but also to miss his chances on the return. Nieminen saved all 8 break points and then won his first to win the second set. In the opening two sets the Polak won 87% points after the first serve, but in the third he slowed down drastically.

- Although I lost the first set I couldn't really play any better than I did. I saved lots of break points and thanks to that I won all of my service games. In the second set my opponent started to slow down a bit and I took my chance. I started to dominate the exchanges and I am very happy because of that win - Nieminen wrote on his blog and then shifted the focus toward his today's opponent:

- I need to be very careful. Dodig shocked Tsonga in the second round, but I am looking forward to the challenge. I'm out of the doubles tournament and I now have more time to train and to rest.

Dodig also lost his doubles match, and that is not good news for him and Melo as they hope to compete in London. But, win against Tsonga certainly lifted his spirits and he now has a solid chance to earn his right to be seeded in the Australian Open draw.

I can still remember Nieminen's and Dodig's last encounter very vividly. They faced each other on Australian Open. Nieminen won against Haas in the first round, and Dodig was struggling against Wu (but, truth be told, he was slightly injured back then). Although they played a 5-set match last time, Dodig's service game was excellent. He served 33 aces and, even more importantly, he saved 17 break points. Dodig lost only one out of 26 of his service games. They played 5 sets mainly because Nieminen won two tie-breaks. Today they play on much faster surface and that is very good news for Dodig. He didn't lose a single service in the last two rounds and winning against Tsonga says pretty much everything about his current form. Nieminen was struggling against Przysiezny in the past round. The Polak entered the tournament as lucky loser and Nieminen only had two-break points in the first two sets. Dodig is probably playing his best tennis right now, and he certainly doesn't lack confidence. On the other side, Nieminen had lots of troubles with injuries recently and it is a big question is he really at 100%. He won two matches in Tokyo but now he has the toughest challenge ahead of him. This handicap could be covered even in three sets if needed. I do have great faith in Dodig's serve and he should also have lots of chances to win points on the return. If he managed to win 25 out of 26 service games in their last encounter, then he should be even more dominant on the fast surface in Tokyo. His performances in the first two rounds are a clear statement in favor of this theory.
