Ivan Dodig - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (6:4 7:6)

Tsonga will take Dodig more seriously

  • Published:

They both passed through the first round without loosing a single serve. In their only match so far Tsonga hadn't lost the serve but he lost the match. Dodig has a 0-6 score against the Top 10 players

There is no such tournament who wouldn't wish for a Tsonga - Monfils finale. Their are both attractive players and crowd magnets. In normal conditions they would both be seeded but Monfils missed out on a lot of tournaments due to his knee injury and his ranking dropped down. Several times this year he made complaints about his luck with the draw and such was his luck this time as well.

Tsonga started his match winning three games in a row and that one break gave him the lead on the sets' scoreboard. The second set saw only two break chances and both were missed by the better ranked Frenchman. Lack of drama was made up for in the tie-break. First Tsonga squandered a 5-1 lead. Monfils managed to get back on 5-5 and save three match-points but couldn't save the fourth. In the end the score was 10:8 for the second seeded player. Although Monfils won 23 points on the return, about as much as his fellow countryman, he didn't have a single break point in the whole match.

- I know Gael for a long time. We often spend time together, play video-games, have dinner. We are friends and it doesn't make it easy to play these matches - Tsonga commented after the match. It looks that his problems with the injury are gone:

- I grabbed my leg towards the end of the match but it was a cramp. It's not easy playing with jet-lag. I flew over from Metz and it's not easy to adjust.

His next match is against the best ranked Croat, as of last week. Dodig came to Tokio to fight on two fronts. He aims for a top 32 finish in order to enter the Australian Open as a seeded player while he is fighting for London in the couples' tournament. Together with Melo he was successful in the first round and the Croatian was successful in his singles match. Very convincing wins against host's hopefulls.

Sugita received an invitation from the organizers but this season he didn't confirmed that he deserved it. Prior to Tokio he managed only two ATP appearances and Dodig convincingly showed the difference in quality. He won 90% points on his serve with a high percentage of first service (78%). With that kind of service game the Japanese had no chance. He had no break-points and the Croatian won almost half the points on the return. Enough for four breaks.

Dodig has three Top 10 wins in his career and one is from a match with Tsonga. Although the Frenchman hadn't lost his serve in that match, he lost two tie-breaks. He injured his finger on the occasion but the defeat came about primarily because he underestimated Dodig. This time he knows what he is up against.

Tsonga will do his part on the serve. It's a classic move with him and he serves well even if the rest of the play isn't good. Dodig may not give such a first impression, but he is a strong server who can cover the net on short returns. This is why he is fighting for London where the best couples will play at the end of the season. They played on grass once and the first set ended with a tie-break. They played 33 games and two ended with a break with no one winning more than 30% on the return. These are very fast conditions and players have trouble adjusting and Tsonga confirmed this. All of this implies good resistence from Dodig who served well in the first round and this is why I selected the over for the first set. until the Frenchman warms up...
