John Isner - Tomas Berdych (5:7 2:6)

Isner served 50 aces in the last two rounds

  • Published:

Berdych didn't even had to play in the past round to proceed to the quarter-finals and he was certainly pleased to get the day off, especially after the tough match in the final last week. Bautista didn't earn a single break-point against Isner, but the American still failed to win the match in two sets.

Although Isner didn't impress anyone with his performance in the last round, his serve was once again the decisive factor. In the first round it took him three sets to earn his first break point, although he played against 173cm tall Chinaman. This time he was much better on the return. He won two of his opponent's service games early in the match and with that he won the first set. But, after the great start, things started to complicate for him.

In the second set both players were very convincing on their service games. Bautista was struggling with his back injury and couple of times he asked for help from his physio. Despite all that, he still managed to win the second set. In the tie-break he won two out of total of seven points he won on the return in the second set. In the third set both player's serve was excellent and, just when it seemed like the match is heading toward another tie-break, Isner shocked Bautista by winning his service game. Of course, there was no way to get back into the match for the Spaniard after that. With that victory Isner remained one of the candidates for London, although he is well aware that it would be very difficult for him to get in this year's Masters:

- I am aware of the situation. The lads in front of me are much closer to London but I do have couple of very important tournaments ahead of me. Anything could happen. I would like to compete in London as that is one of the tournaments I never played before. I know it is a cliché, but I must be focused on every new opponent I face and then we shall see what the future brings - Isner said.

Unlike any other player in the tournament, Berdych proceeded to quarter-finals without a single game played in the previous round. Just like the last year, Davydenko again made a huge mockery. He wanted to drop out from the tournament in Beijing, but the officials didn't allow him to do that and then he said that he will intentionally lose in the first round. But, surprise, surprise, he won against Lu with ease. After that he decided to drop out from the tournament. The official reason is the wrist injury he is supposedly suffering from for months now. The cynics would probably say that he has a lot bigger problems than his wrist...

But, thanks to Davydenko's show, Berdych was free in the second round. And he couldn't have wished for better news as he really needed some rest after playing in the final in Bangkok last week. After Bangkok he needed some time to adjust to the new surface. That was clear in the match against Andujar. He started it very slowly but in the end Berdych won with ease.

Isner doesn't perform very good outside USA this year. He proceeded to the quarter-finals here mainly because he didn't face any tough opponents in the past rounds. But, his serve is what makes him a real danger to anyone. In last two rounds he served 50 aces and Berdych will have to find a way to deal with that. He lost the final in Bangkok to Raonic, and match against Isner will probably be similar to that one. Luckily for him, surface in China is much slower than the one in Bangkok.

The margin probably looks very high, but this is Isner we are talking about. I expected even bigger margin considering the odds. It is crucial for the American to find his rhythm today. His performances in the last two rounds were far from good, but his serve was excellent. He served 47 aces through 6 sets and allowed only two break chances for his opponents. True, he was playing against the players that aren't that good on the return, but Berdych could also have lots of trouble with Isner's hard shots. Last week he was harmless on the return against Raonic, and he only played one match on this tournament so far. His performances are getting worse with every match and the Czech admitted that he is tired. Although Isner won against him both times they played on hardcourt, today I think ''over'' is the smartest bet. Isner played three-set matches against Wu and Bautista, and three sets were played both times against Berdych on hardcourt also. When Isner is on the court, then this margin could be surpassed even in two sets.
