Fabio Fognini - Tommy Robredo (7:6 2:1) forf.

Robredo gets a quick rematch opportunity

  • Published:

The Spaniard beat Montanes for the seventh time in his career. Fognini squeezed through against his compatriot who was serving for the match. Last week they played for two and a half hours. The Italian managed better in a match full of breaks

Montanes and Robredo played each other for the first time 13 years ago. It was at a Challenger and Robredo won in two sets. After that he beat him on seven more occasions, every time without dropping a set. All until last year when his compatriot finally retaliated. Even though he ended that negative run, Montanes didn't manage to start his own.

Even though they played each other many times, only one of their matches took place on hard court. Three years ago Robredo won on this same spot, and he repeated that once again. Montanes was holding strong until 4-4. After that he won only one more serve game. Robredo's serve statistics look out of this world. He hit nine aces and won 22/24 first serve points. Naturally, he kept his serves until the end with giving only one break chance to his opponent.

Fognini probably still has last week on his mind. He was one set and 4-1 ahead against Nadal and had a break point for 5-1. He had the game and the World No 1 on his knees. He had everything, but then he demonstrated once again why he never fulfilled his expectations. A few mistakes, a few rushed moves and Nadal was back in the match. The Italian's game fell apart in the third set, and he also needed physio assistance. Even though it seemed it was more an issue of hurt ego.

All of this obviously had consequences for his game and, more importantly, his approach. He was never a player who can get motivated by weaker opponents, so he was almost eliminated in the Shanghai first round. Even though his score against Lorenzi was 3-0, Lorenzi pulled off a "Fognini". Namely, he had everything in his hands, but he allowed his opponent to return.

It was an unusual match considering the fast conditions in Shanghai. Of the 10 games in the first set, we saw at least one break point in six of them, 12 in total. However, only one of those games actually ended in a break, which gave Lorenzi a 1-0 lead. He also had a 5-3 lead in the second set, but couldn't reach the match point. Fognini squeezed through, won the tie-break, and after that, there was no way Lorenzi could come back.

So Robredo quickly got his rematch opportunity. Fognini won last week after 11 breaks and two and a half hours of play. Fognini had three winners more then, but it is questionable whether he can repeat that performance. It definitely didn't look like that against Lorenzi.

They met last week. The Italian won the match after two and a half hours, which Robredo could have won in two sets. He did not win, because Fognini played brilliantly. Then the Italian easily beat Hewitt and almost left Nadal on a few games; more about that in the preview. However, that was last week. I think that exhausted the Italian, especially mentally. He should have been knocked out in the first round, but Lorenzi gambled away the serve he needed to win in two sets. The Spaniard is in a great lead because his opponent is unlikely to play like he played in Beijing. He also has some minor injuries, has not had a day's rest since the match which lasted for two and a half hours and I think that many things go in the Spaniard's favor. Even if the match goes on for hours, that can only help Robredo. Fognini's game is worsening. He is exhausted after Nadal, and he is not a player who can recover quickly mentally. What Lorenzi missed, the Spaniard will not.
