Vasek Pospisil - Gael Monfils (5:7 6:7)

Pospisil reaches his second Top 10 win of the season

  • Published:

Monfils coped excellently in indoor conditions of an enclosed stadium in Shanghai. He had almost two aces per game on average. Pospisil handled a slightly tired Gasquet by getting a break in each set. He didn't give him a single break chance

Pospisil once again justified his unwritten rule - he plays best against the best. He recently lost to Del Bonis indoors, which was hard to understand. And then last week he was a couple of points short of beating Ferrer. Even though the Spaniard managed to get away at the last minute, this time he got his new Top 10 victim, the second one this season.

Gasquet is in the race to London so he came to Shanghai highly motivated. Motivated but tired. And the Canadian took advantage of that. He hit 10 ace serves, and lost only three first serve points. Even though he had a poor percentage of first serves in (49%), he didn't offer a single break chance to the Frenchman. He won the match routinely with one break in each set, without missing a single chance.

- I knew I had to play aggressively the whole time, even in crucial moments. I trained hard last week and now it is paying off. This is a great win for me, my second of the season against a Top 10 player, so I am looking forward to the rest of the season - were the satisfied words of Pospisil after a major win.

Monfils was unlucky with the draw last week. His first match after the US Open and his first opponent was Tsonga. The compatriots played a level first set in which Tsonga managed better and eventually advanced to the second round. Here Monfils was more fortunate. Ito was the first to get a break chance. He had two at the start of the match. He didn't use them and that was it from the Japanese.

Quick play conditions in Shanghai and the closed roof over the central court only helped Monfils. He hit 15 aces in eight serve games and obviously finished the match without a lost serve. He took a 3-0 lead in the first set, 2-0 in the second and advanced to the second round after only 53 minutes of play. So in an express manner.

Even though Pospisil demonstrated this season he can do much, he probably did Monfils  a favour because the Frenchman probably wouldn't want to play Gasquet as he was eliminated last week by a different Top 10 compatriot of his. In any case, we are expecting an attractive match in which both will be looking for points. They played each other in the Davis Cup last year and Monfils won indoors, but Vasek is a much more dangerous opponent now.

I respect Pospisil. Not so much for his play but rather for his approach. Ferrer handed him the initiative last week and Pospisil almost won. This time Gasquet did the same thing but the Canadian didn't miss his chance this time. It was a very tired display by Gasquet, who was trapped once again into passiveness. Monfils doesn't have such problems. Primarily because he can win a lot of free points in these fast conditions. If we take a look at Monfils' last 10 tournaments, we can see that he lost only to experienced, proven players. Pospisil is still not one of them and now he is facing a different match to the Ferrer and Gasquet ones. Unlike them, Monfils is motivated and points from the Masters 1000 series mean a lot to him. The whole point of this tip is simple. Pospisil took what was offered to him, but the wins against stronger opponents raised the odds. The Frenchman has more quality, strength and versatility, so I will gladly play on him in these conditions, on a tournament rich in points, at these odds. This handicap can easily be covered in three sets, which is important for me, as Monfils can get a little carried away, but should eventually show greater quality. Another important fact is that the winner plays against Federer. And I know for a fact that such matches attract Monfils as flames attract moths.
