Kei Nishikori - Grigor Dimitrov (6:3 6:4)

The Japanese has back problems, Dimitrov has a new coach

  • Published:

Nishikori failed to defend his title in Tokyo, but he managed to get injured again. His chronic back problems started up again. Dimitrov decided to spend more time with Sharapova and moved to Los Angeles. Roger Rasheed is his new temporary coach

Nishikori became the best tennis player in Japanese history, but he's still not the best in Asia. For now, Srichaphan is still the one. Together with Na Li, Nishikori is credited for the rise of tennis in Asia, currently the world's largest market. This is why the Japanese has some sponsorship contracts that exceed some signed by the best tennis players in the world. Last week he defended his title in Tokyo and the even got extensive media coverage in Asia.

- I trained hard. I'm ready physically and mentally, and my Davis Cup match against Argentina also helped me with that. There's no pressure, but I think I'm in good shape. My goal is to win this tournament every year - said the Japanese before the tournament.

This is somewhat unrealistic because he also admitted to having problems in the last few months. He had no confidence in his tennis and suffered a crisis. He was on the verge of being defeated in the first round. Melzer had a set and 5-2, and got into the second round thanks to the Austrian. He wasn't himself against Almagro. His elbow gave him some grief, his back started to hurt and he could barely move in the third set.

- I hurt my back and in the end I was barely moving. I think I played well considering the circumstances, but the result is the only thing that matters in the end. Unfortunately, I've had back problems for years and today my back just could hold - said the Japanese who rarely has two good tournaments in a row due to frequent physical problems.

Dimitrov has no problems, at least not with injuries. His private life is doing wonderfully. He's dating Maria Sharapova and they spend much of their time together. She's injured and isn't playing, and he's taken to losing in the first round. At the US Open he unexpectedly lost to Sousa, and last week's defeat to Batista Agut came as even bigger surprise. In order to spend as much time as possible with his girlfriend, he decided to move to Los Angeles. Of course, this doesn't mean Stockholm is no longer his base.

- The Good to Great Tennis Academy has terminated the cooperation with Grigor Dimitrov. The decision is amicable and Grigor will now spend more time in Los Angeles. He got to Top 30 with us and we are proud of our successful cooperation - reads the statement on the pages of the Stockholm academy.

However, this isn't where the changes stop. Dimitrov himself must realise he needs to make some changes, primarily related to his coach. Tsonga recently terminated his collaboration with esteemed Australian coach Roger Rasheed and Dimitrow used the fact to his advantage:

- Roger and I have agreed to a brief collaboration. He will help me to finish this season and to prepare for the next.

The last time Dimitrov had three defeats in a row was at the beginning of the season, after his first ATP final in Brisbane. His personal life affected his form, but he didn't forget how to play. It remains to be seen how Nishikori reacts after Tokyo. He experienced problems with his tennis and finally his back, which is a chronic problem for him. This time last year he had problems with his knee.

Nishikori could not retain his title in Tokio, but he did look emaciated against Almagro. With his knee problematic throughout the season, now his back has turned up as well. The pain obviously became chronic, since by the end of the match, he couldn’t move at all, and considering that the stands were full of his fans, he was obviously unable to continue. Even if he were fully recuperated, which is highly doubtful , his gameplay is also not good lately. He was supposed to go home after the first round, but Melzer messed up. The high odds on Dimitrov are due to Bulgarian playing badly of late. He failed last week, on his first match after US Open. He hired Rasheed, a top notch coach, and I believe he will be dangerous here. Also, Nishikori is a big time player and that will provide additional motivation. Shangai is a fast court, and he can go a long way with his service.

Although you can find odds as high as @2,5, for Dimitrov winning, I decided to go for a lower odds with the bookmaker which considers forfeit as getting beaten in one point.
