Stanislas Wawrinka - Milos Raonic (7:6 6:4)

Even though he played 11 matches in three weeks, Raonic shows no sign of tiredness

  • Published:

This time Raonic lost a set but settled the third set with an early break. He is currently on the tenth place and on a chase for London. Wawrinka could have finished his match in two sets but can be happy with going trough in the end

No one played more matches in the last three weeks than Raonic: the title in Bangkok, the final in Japan and a third round here. Eleven matches in three weeks in total. Despite all, you cannot notice his fatigue. He is playing on adrenaline and is in shape. The motivation is huge. Even though it was unthinkable a few months ago, he is now on a chase for London. He is currently the tenth player in the world and is just 300 points behind Gasquet.

- I have two great weeks behind me but there is no stopping now. This is an ATP 1000 Series tournament and every point could be important.

In the second round he got another great win. Verdasco was always a tough opponent for him. It is well known that the Canadian has problems on his return and the left-handed Spaniard knew how to take advantage of that in the past. This time he couldn't do it. The first set was decided in a tie-break as both players kept their serves without a threat. Despite the close first set the Spaniard took just one point in the tie-break.

The second set headed for a tie-break as well but in the eight game the Canadian lost his serve. In the three service games before that he lost just three points all together. The Spaniard made the score even. It looked like Verdasco would take control of the match because of the surprise break he got, but he lost his serve shortly after. Raonic took the 3-1 lead, saved three break-points for a 5-2 and served out the match for a new win.

Wawrinka had a dramatic match, too. Anderson isn't playing well after his comeback, especially on his return. The South African beat Hanescu without a break. The Romanian who currently has seven straight defeats took all of his 17 service games in that match. Anderson got through somehow and Wawrinka started a very convincing match.

Soon the Swiss had a double break advantage. He let one go, but got the set advantage nevertheless. At the beginning of the second set he didn't make any of the five break-point chances he had in a single game and he was punished for it this time. Anderson took the first chance he got and made the score even, one all in sets. The deciding set went to a tie-break and we once again saw how much self-confidence the Swiss has. Even though he was 5-2 down, he kept calm and focused until the end. He let Anderson have just one more point and didn't even allow him a match-point.

Wawrinka awaits another server now. Raonic is in a lot better shape and has a lot more self-confidence in his play than Anderson. Wawrinka had a weak realization of break-points in that match (2/11). Against the Canadian he will have a lot less chances and if he doesn't take them it will be a lot harder for him in the tie-break.

The conditions in Shanghai are very fast and all players agree with that. That is not only the case when the roof on the central stadium is closed up because of rain. This happened yesterday and now Raonic is facing a certainly better player on the service than Verdasco. I expected lower odds and got higher. I don't see that the Swiss can achieve anything on the return, especially not on the start. In these conditions bets like these are the best long-term choice and that is why I continue. For those who cannot reach this betting house, a good alternative is definitely more than 12.5 games or a tiebreak in the first set.
