Fernando Verdasco - Milos Raonic (6:7 6:3 3:6)

Raonic is playing without resting as he is fighting for London

  • Published:

The Canadian concluded the last two weeks with a title and a loss in the final, but Przsiezny didn't manage to use that to his advantage. Verdasco had an easy job with a Chinese qualifier. He won against Raonic in the last three matches but each of them was on clay

The series of successful matches continued for Raonic. Although this is his third consecutive tournament, and he reached the final in the last two, there is no noticeable fatigue. The reason to that is, of course, excellent preparedness but even more it is his style. The Canadian spends very little energy in exchanges, he is playing very aggressively and on service he is brutally simple. The starting stroke usually ends with a point or it offers him a softer return which he attacks immediately. That is why he reached the final last week without lost services.

Here he started the tournament against Przyseizny, a player with similar aggressive style. The Pole kept his service pace to the end of the first set but then the Canadian made a break and there was no coming back. It was the same in the second set where one break was again enough. Of course, the serve was again unstoppable. He scored 16 aces and saved all three break points.

 - I played very well in the key moments. I was patient and waiting for my opportunities. I missed some of them but I wasn't quitting my aggressive approach in those moments - commented the satisfied Canadian who is still in the race for London.

 - I had two excellent weeks but there is no stopping now. This is a tournament of 1000 Series and every point can be important.

In most cases, when a home player gets an invitation it means an easier draw, especially in Asian tournaments where the home players are not inside Top 100. Verdasco used that opportunity although he started off the match a bit relaxed.

Zhang was doing great until 5-5 in the first set. Both players decisively won their service games and then the Chinese lost his entire service which could have secured him at least a tiebreak. After that, the left-handed Spaniard won three games in a row. He opened the second set with a break and later only increased his lead. It was a decisive win in which Verdasco obviously didn't play at full power.

This time he will have no time to relax. Against Raonic the key is to serve well and wait for a possible opportunity on the return, although they rarely happen. This year they played in Madrid, on a tournament which was a turning point for the Spaniard. Until that tournament he looked lost and disinterested but then he started to play well. Two wins brought him back to live and one was against Raonic.

This might not seem great at the first look, but Shangai offers some fast conditions, mostly because of the rain. A lot of matches were played in the arena, but open courts are fast as well. Raonic played three weeks without a break. He's very aggressive, but it's all based on the service. Verdasco knows how to play against him, and he has good experiences. He's lefthanded, he can knock out the opponent with his service, and I think we have some fast service games ahead of us. In these fast conditions, with Raonic there and an uncomfortable lefthanded player, this bet seems very promising. The alternative is a tie-break in the first set which can be found on Bet365, for example.
