Tenis » Moscow (M), Hard court (indoor), 2nd Round
17.10.2013. 11:10 Finished
Ivo Karlović - Denis Istomin (6:3 6:7 7:6)

Karlovic proved that last year's semifinals were no coincidence

  • Published:

The Croatian player reached a decisive win in which he had three breaks in 10 break points. Istomin decisively won against a home player who is not in shape but he lost the second set because he relaxed too much

We wrote about that in the preview of the first round. The tournament in Moscow saved Karlovic's season last year. By entering the semifinals he came back to Top 100 and so got the motivation for this season. If it happened that he remained outside that rank and had to play ATP qualifiers, who knows what he would decide. In the first round he played against Kudla. The American won their only previous match in an interesting way. The Croatian player was better on both serves, he had more break points and more points won but he lost the match. This time he didn't allow for any complications.

Although Karlovic used the have short matches, mostly because there were no exchanges after the serve, this time he was the most deserving for only 69 minutes of play. He won his service games with ease. On average he lost less than one point per game and he also scored 15 aces. What surprised was the performance on the return, 10 break points and three breaks. The American had only 38% of points won on second service. It was one of the more decisive wins for Karlovic this season.

Istomin should have had an easy task as well. Kuznetsov is not playing indoors and he has only just returned from South America where he played on clay. In addition, he has problems with his back and with his shape. The Uzbek finished the first set in 24 minutes. He left the Russian with no games won but in the second set there was a change of situation on court. Kuznetsov was the one to threaten and with two breaks he tied the scored in sets. Although in that period he had nine break points, in the third set we watched a rerun of the first one, a powerless Russian and in the end an easy end for Istomin.

 - I didn't start the match well. The plan was to play aggressively but soon it was 5-0 for Istomin. I knew I couldn't catch up with that. In the second set I started to play better. In the end the break at the start of the decisive set decided. After that my opponent took the initiative on the court once again - said disappointed Kuznetsov after the match.

This is the first match between Karlovic and Istomin. Although this arena's conditions are slower, they are quite suited for the Croatian player because he has more time to react on the return. The decisive win in the first round reminded of the performance from last year when he reached the semifinals. It seems that his back problem is history because he won the doubles match as well. Istomin will surely be greatly tested, not only on return but also on his service.

A general opinion is that Karlovic and similar "treetop servers" are best suited by fast courts, but that is not the truth. Their serve will be efficient anyway in most cases, and somewhat slower court gives them more time for returns in rallies. Moscow is ideal for the Croatian player. Last year he reached the semifinal hear without allowing a set and than lost to left-handed Bellucci who constantly sent heavy spins to his backhand. He won't have such problems with Istomin, since the Uzbekistani plays flat. His form suggests that he is not at his best, and Karlovic played really impressive against Kudla. I expected Ivo to be the favorite, but the ranking said otherwise, and I don't agree with that at all.
