Tsonga: If I want to make it to London, I have to play

If the French wins the title in Vienna, he skips Federer in the race for London. Brands played his first match without a let break-ball and the French could be a hard nut to crack. Last year, he played three sets without breaks against Del Potro.

The race for London is slowly but safely heating up and calculations have already started. Tsonga has surely started adding numbers since he's currently ranked ninth. If he wins the title, he'd win 250 points and skip Federer, who isn't playing this week. The French had skipped the American summer due to a knee injury, but returned last week.

Tsonga came back to the Tour with the finals in Metz, in which he won three matches based on his reputation. It was not until Shanghai that he started playing his tennis and he grabbed 360 points in three convincing wins. He wasn't able to deal with Dokovic. This time he didn't get his chance.

- I played well in the second set, but I'm aware I have to be better and continue working on my game - said Tsonga after the defeat by Dokovic and then revealed the most important motif of coming to Vienna:

- I have to play if I want to make it to London at the end of the season. I have to play and win as much as possible.

The best French tennis player is again without a coach. He said that the reason for ending his collaboration with Roger Rasheed was the language barrier, but that story doesn't seem very plausible. At the beginning of their collaboration, he said there were no problems in that field. Tsonga had been without a coach for a long time before Rasheed. Obviously, the team work doesn't suit him, even though he admits from time to time he needs a man to motivate him. This time, he's motivated by London.

Brands could be a very unpleasant opponent. We wrote about him giving a lot of trouble to Del Potro last year. They played three tie-breaks and it was the first time since 1991 and since the ATP have kept official record that both players had over 30 aces. The Argentinian came through, but he joked after the three-hour match he would have rather stayed at home if he'd known what he was facing.

- I knew I'd had problems on the court. Brands service was good and consistent and he used a lot of kick on the second service, which caused additional problems - explained the Austrian how hard it is to return against Brands.

Three years ago, the German took Tsonga to the fifth set in Roland Garros, when the French was the major favorite. Here, they played two years ago, when Tsonga won two sets, but the second set was challenging. It is definitely important how the French adapts after the Asian tour.

The principle here is very simple, as in most of such cases. Tsonga came to Vienna because he is after London, that is the most important reason. Therefore he has the motivation, but most players have problems adapting after the Asian tour. I expect the same from the Frenchman who is arriving after the Shanghai semifinals. Knowing him, he will focus on his service and wait for his chance. Concerning Brands, we know what to expect from him, especially here in Vienna where he is very predictable. He has excellent serves and he is not making many problems on the return. Against Haider he didn't lose his service but he brought both sets to over. Last year he played five matches here and each time he was over in first set. Although he didn't cover that against Tsonga two years ago, those were the semifinals. Tsonga is still not in his rhythm and I expect him to pass this without significant problems.
