Fabio Fognini - Lukasz Kubot (7:5 6:2)

How motivated will Fognini be for this match?

  • Published:

The Italian had a very good performance in Asia, but he could have problems adjusting. That's what Kubot used against Mayer to get his first ATP win after Wimbledon quarterfinals

Fognini played his first ATP finals last year on the Russian indoor court. He lost to Klizan in Sankt Petersburg then, and then didn't win once until the season ended. He didn't feel like playing, because some of those games were really embarrassing. It's Fognini - a genius in one game, a spoiled brat in another.

The Italian won two ATP titles in a row this season, and only fatigue prevented him from getting the third one in the third week. Then he got fined for inappropriate behavior on Wimbledon, tanked the last match game in Cincinnati with two intentional foot faults with services and then gave us a cream on top. He surrendered two points before the end in Sankt Peterburg because of a brawl with the referee. Of course, he reported it as an injury, which cannot be abjudicated by the ATP that easily.

Even when we thought he'll play the Asian tour with half a heart, he became brilliant again. He left Hewitt with two games, and lead 6-2, 4-1 with a break ball for 5-1 against Nadal. No one dominated over the Spaniard that way this season, expect for Nole in Monte Carlo, perhaps. But, he blew his chances and there was a turn. It's a story of his career. Dokovic wasn't cheap with compliments last week, either, even though he defeated him easily. However, he learned his lesson:

- Fabio is really talented. Even though it doesn't seem that way, he moves fast and makes you work hard.

Kubot used what he was offered. Like most players who have been to Asia, Mayer had problems adjusting, as well. His services were god in the first set, and he came through in uncomfortable situations, but he couldn't endure in the tie-break. The Polish lost only one point. In the second set, it looked as if the German woke up. He started to lead 3-0, but soon enough, a turn happened and Kubot used two breaks to get a match service, which he used easily.

You could say it was a routine win for Kubot, but you should remember he only won one match out of last ten before Wienna. It was against Zhang in Shanghai qualifiers, where he was the absolute favorite. Mayer had problems adjusting as well, and so could the Italian. As for the matches between the two, Kubot only won one, but it was a clay court every time. These conditions work better for Kubot.

Fognini is a special player and that is why we need to look at him from a different perspective. He played badly during American tour and then he played great in Asia. He was motivated by a big stage. Yesterday we spoke about how Monfils behaved in his match. The French played in Shanghai against Federer and Djokovic and he came here completely unmotivated. The other problem is accumulated fatigue. The same story is with the Italian. Matches against Nadal and Djokovic in Asia and now he has to face Kubot in Vienna and I am not sure whether he even wants to play here. That means he will again trudge on the court, argue with referees over some insignificant points and Kubot is not a player that suits him. Fast conditions and opponent who will often come to the net will trouble him. That is the same tactics Ram used to defeat him at US Open. Kubot will not allow him a lot of breathing space because he can sense his chance and I believe he will get it since such defeats are nothing new for Fognini. Besides, In St. Petersburg he forfeited a match against similar opponent when he was two points away from a defeat. That time he defended the finals, so he had motivation. Now he is the 17th player on the ATP table, he is not chasing London and I think he wants to get some rest and everything looks to be going into the favor of Kubot. That is why is opted for a higher stake on a "surprise". Besides, Fognini ended his last season with six consecutive defeats.
