Joao Sousa - Jerzy Janowicz (2:6 5:7)

Janowicz still had shoulder issues, but he will try to pull through

  • Published:

Sousa returned the favor to the Spaniard for his recent defeat, and thus reached his jubilee 10th indoor ATP win this season. The Pole struggled with unforced errors and both sets lasted longer, but he won and that is currently what's most important for him

Janowicz became a sensation last year and Paris is slowly coming up where he will defend the last year's finals. Although the Pole had proven himself this season as well, and he even has the semi-finals of the Grand Slam on Wimbledon, his injuries stopped him after that tournament. He was dragging his shoulder injury for quite some time as well, and then his back became a problem. Now he's forced to play because he has a lot of points to defend, especially in Paris next week. And the outcome of this tournament could change his ranking quite a bit.

- I have to focus on my game, and not on the points I'm defending. If I play well, I will defend my points, so my game is the key - said the Pole last week.

For the last couple of weeks you could clearly read in the Polish media that Janowicz isn't completely ready. Lately he had a lot of trouble with his injuries and he didn't manage to fully recuperate, but he has no other choice and he has to play if he wants to have any chance of defending some points. Although Carreno-Busta is first and foremost for clay, he took the Pole into two extended sets. Janowicz oscillated quite a bit and was way over-offensive, which he tends to do sometimes. The most important thing for him at this point is the fact that he reached the win and earned key points.

Sousa became the first Portuguese in Asia with an ATP title in history. The success is even greater because he achieved it indoors, and not on clay which is his usual choice when it comes to tournaments. Kuala Lumpur was no coincidence because only a week earlier he reached the indoor semi-finals in Russia. That's when Garcia-Lopez left him on only a couple of games, but the Portuguese returned the favor with a win.

Unlike Janowicz, who dictated the pace in his match, Garcia-Lopez and Sousa aren't servers. Both are looking for points through changes, and that's why we saw more breaks. In the second service both players had problems, but the Portuguese did more in the first one. It could have been Sousa's convincing win, but he complicated the situation when he lost the match service. The home player felt an opportunity to return, but he once more lost the service, and the meeting ended with rackets being broken. He couldn't hide his frustrations.

Of course Janowicz will dictate the pace in this match as well with his winners and unforced errors, so everything will depend on his oscillations. His shoulder is still a problem because he constantly needs the physiotherapist's aid, but her will try to pull through. His whole season depends on these two weeks, especially in the next one where he will defend the Series 1000 finale.

Janowicz is not playing convincingly. He has been having problems with his shoulder for a while now and I doubt he would play if he weren't in a difficult situation. Next week he will be defending 625 points and every win is important for him. If the situation was different, I believe he wouldn't be playing because he can't finish a match without physio's help before and after the match. Sousa has 10 ATP indoor wins this season even though he has a reputation of a clay player. He plays safely, he isn't afraid of stronger names which he demonstrated on several occasions in the last months. This was covered by Carreno-Busta in the first round, who is far more prominent clay player than the Portuguese. Since I wouldn't be surprised if the Pole lost today, I think this +3,5 is a very good bet.
