Fernando Verdasco - Michal Przysiezny (3:6 6:7)

Verdasco is struggling with injury, but needs doubles points

  • Published:

The Spaniard forfeited both his singles and doubles matches in Stockholm last week. He accepted an invite here, but primarily for the sake of doubles as he is chasing the London Final Masters in that category. Przysiezny went through the qualifiers, but not in a convincing manner

Verdasco started last week with two major wins. First he got his revenge over Dodig, who beat him in New York and Shanghai, in the doubles match, where he is still in the run for London with Marrero. After that he also beat Nieminen. Both matches ended in three sets and such a rhythm had negative consequences on his body. He cancelled his following singles and doubles matches even though they were quarter-finals.

- I felt some pain in the Nieminen match halfway through the second set. After the match I got in touch with my doctor and physio, but we couldn't determine what was bothering me. I felt some more pain in the morning prior to the Ferrer match so I decided to quit - said Verdasco after his concession is Stockholm, but it seems he still has motivation:

- I want to play as Marrero and I are on the hunt for London. We need points.

The left-handed Spaniard didn't have a single indoor ATP win until last week. That is not  good piece of news prior to his home tournament where he was eliminated in the second round last year. If we count his injury in, he could face some problems, but he still accepted the invite.

Przysiezny went through the qualifiers here. The draw was in his favour, but he had to catch up the result in both matches. In the first round he played an 18-year old American, who was there by invite. He won the first set in a convincing manner, but  then lost the second and managed to convert only one of the six break points in the third. Luckily for him, that was enough. In the second match he lost a set once again because of complacency. Even though the Italian Giustino didn't convert a single break (0/7), he won the second set in the tie break. But the Pole won the final set with dropping a single game.

The Pole has a successful season behind him. He reached his best ranking at the age of 29, and he played his first ATP semifinals last month. His ATP wins in the last four years could be counted easily with one hand, but now he is fighting for the Top 60. He was always known as a talented player whose main problem was an unprofessional lifestyle. He had a lot of injury problems and several knee operations, but this season he has proven that a focused mind can overcome many physical problems.

He could have a chance against the Spaniard. Verdasco only mentioned the doubles in his preview as he is aiming for London. It is questionable how ready he is for singles, and Przysiezny is not a player who will be going for longer rallies. That never suited him.

Przysiezny is enjoying the best season of his career because of his success in the last few months. The semifinal in Sankt Petersburg was the turning point for him, and this is his fifth ATP tournament in a row. He was not brilliant in the qualifiers, but that was due to inferior opponents. He would lose sets and then easily win matches. Verdasco was injured last week, which made him forfeit in single and doubles. According to him, the doubles match he is playing with Marrero tomorrow is much more important to him, as he is chasing London in that segment. The Pollack is playing aggressively, and has covered this handicap against both Raonic and Bennetau, while taking a set against Nieminen. In these circumstances a +4.5 handicap looks good to me. For those with more courage, I recommend taking a smaller bet on Pollack to win in one of the booking houses that regards forfeiting as a loss. I doubt Verdasco would have given up in the quarterfinal last week had he not been worried.
