Tipsarevic lost to a 17 year-old last week

Granollers tends to play good in Valencia and he won against Tipsarevic in Asia. Tipsarevic lost to 17 year-old Khachanov last week and he didn't even had a single break chance in that game. In the next round young Khachanov won only 4 games against Karlovic.

After a short Asian tour, Granollers took the week off. The main reason for that decision was to be fresh and rested for the tournament at home in Valencia. He always performs good there. The surface is very slow and indoor conditions really suit his game. Three years ago he surprised everyone by going all the way to the final from the qualifiers. One year after that he won the title there and confirmed that his performance year ago was no coincidence. Last year he lost to Dolgopolov in the quarter final.

In the US Open he won three consecutive 5-set matches and after that he lost convincingly to Dokovic. But, before that he won against Dokovic's countryman and his today's opponent Tipsarevic. Janko didn't have a single break chance in that match, and he was really looking bad at that time.

- I am very happy because of this win. I played a good match against the excellent opponent - Granollers said after the win in Shanghai.

As for Tipsarevic, he will look to forget this season as soon as possible. He started it as a Top 10 player and now he is barely in the Top 30. He could easily end the season outside of the Top 30 and lose his right to be seeded for the Grand Slam tournaments. Last two years he won more than 50 matches per season, and this year he won only 20. He didn't win a single game indoor (0-4). He played a good game in the Davis Cup month and a half ago, he rose above his problems, but after that he started losing the ATP matches again.

He lost three consecutive matches prior to this one and his confidence is probably very low. Last week he lost to a 17 year-old with the invitation for the tournament, and he didn't even had a single break chance that day. He is struggling with injuries, but he said afterwards that the injuries are no excuse for playing that badly:

- I am having problems with my foot, but that is not a serious injury. I won't lie to you, I wasn't at 100% prior to this match, but I was able to play without any trouble. I don't think I played that badly. I just wasn't able to do anything on the return - he said.

Now he will face another solid opponent, but this one is more experienced and more dangerous than the Russian teenager who didn't allow him a single break chance in Moscow. And the conditions there are very similar to the ones in Valencia...

The odds for Granollers's win are on the rise but for me there is no doubt. Spaniard here often played the best tennis career. Last year he gave Dolgopolov a lesson , but it was the quarterfinals . In the last three seasons with 13 wins in this tournament , five against Top 20 players. It is for this tournament specially prepared , while Tipsarevic last week lost what little confidence he had left .
