Marcel Granollers - Fabio Fognini (3:6 2:6)

Granollers reached the second round after 19 minutes of playing

  • Published:

Tipsarevic came to collect 10.000 euros, the prize amount of the first round. He knew he wasn't ready for the match, but he still tried to play. Fognini lost the set against the returning Klizan who lost all his strength in the third set

Last year Tipsarevic forfeited the match in Valencia after only nine games. After that he was booed off in Paris because he gave up at 4-1 for Janowicz in the third set. The audience didn't like that one bit, and the ones who are more familiar with the situation know that back then after winning against Monaco he secured London. His reputation was then shaken by the numerous media titles because usually he's a great fighter whom many of his colleagues respect. Sadly, he again didn't fare well.

The meeting between Granollers and Tipsarevic lasted only 19 minutes. Janko saved three break-balls and took a lead with 2-1, but decided to forfeit the match anyway. What casts a shadow over the whole match is the intended forfeit. He came to Valencia one night before the match, which clearly suggests he wasn't ready. Usually in such situations the qualifications player is the most angry one, because he's waiting for a chance to get into the tournament as a lucky loser. It's true that the prize fund of the Series 500 is rich, but it was never expected from the Top 10 player only to collect the 10.000 euros.

- It was obvious that my opponent had issues with his foot injury. Besides that, he called the physiotherapist after the first game. I hope it's nothing serious and I wish him a speedy recovery - said the Spaniard after three games played, and then he turned towards this week's ambitions:

- I love playing in Valencia. Although this is one of the last tournaments of the season, I still have strength and I'm motivated to score future accomplishments.

With the motivation being mentioned, the same thing is hard to predict when it comes to Fognini. It usually comes down to his usual mood, but in tournaments like these the tiniest bit can decide the outcome. One wrong umpire's decision or one of those that don't suit him, and a discussion will surely ensue. After that it's usually the behavior which doesn't suit any professional player, and in the end, logically, the defeat.

We've experienced a case just like that last week in Vienna. He had a very good edition against Kubot, he was concentrated in the first set against Hasse and won a tie-break, and then his game and motivation fell without any explanation. After the won set he was down to two games by the end of the match. He opened this tournament with a win and a third set with no games lost. In this case it's probably because of Klizan who lost his strength. The Slovakian hadn't played since New York, and he still had trouble with his wrist injury. In the third set Klizan scored only 44% of the first service, and added four double errors. He won more points on the return.

Granollers and Fognini go way back. Behind them are seven international matches, and this season they both shared victories. Only once did they play on hardcourt, and that meeting favored the Spaniard, who is also the favorite for this match. Especially because this is the type of tournament on which he always plays his best tennis.

Valencia is a tournament at which Granollers always plays his best tennis. Three years ago he reached the finale after qualifications and then he won the tournament and had four wins over top 20 players. Last year he reached quarter-finale. Regarding Forgini, he had two difficult sets against Klizan who came to Valencia completely unprepared. The Slovakian player did not play since New York and arm injury and he lost strength in the third set. The Italian used his chance, as he did against Kubot in Vienna, but this time he has a difficult task. Th Spaniard can attack and defend, he has better serve that the Italian and these are conditions that suit him perfectly. They played many times and the only match they played on hardcourt was won by Granollers. Fognini has a reputation as a player that ends his seasons poorly and these are not his favorable conditions and we can count on his lack of motivation, as he often exhibits that. Something like that happened to him in the second round in Vienna where he managed to win only two games in two sets.
