Tenis » Basel (M), Hard court (indoor), 2nd Round
24.10.2013. 18:10 Finished
Juan Martin Del Potro - Marcos Baghdatis (6:1 6:2)

Baghdatis has a chance to resist, but it will be hard to win

  • Published:

Both players got late to Basel, and you could see yesterday that Del Potro wasn't himself after a successful Asian tour. The Cypriot resisted hard in Tokyo, but it takes more to get a win

Del Potro built a name and a reputation in the last few years, and that's crucial in tennis because not all matches can be won playing. The Argentinian didn't seem completely ready in the first round of Basel. His movement was a bit weak, there were unexpected errors, but the opponent was clearly impressed. Laaksonen got a wildcard for this tournament, like most Swiss players who play Davis Cup occasionally. He made two double errors in the first game, and gave away the lead to the Argentinian.

Even though he started with 2-0 against the inexperienced opponent, Del Potro allowed the home player to come back. The easy second service on the break ball was punished with the backhand return winner. Even though the Argentinian made a new break, and didn't allow new chances for the opponent on his service, he didn't make many himself, either. He solved the second set with one break, too. The title defender was satisfied nevertheless:

- I think I played decently for the first tournament match. My opponent was a bit nervous at the beginning. I used my chances, served well, and that's it.

Del Potro supposedly came late to Basel because he celebrated his grandfather's 80th birthday in Argentina. It seems that coming late this week has an effect. Baghdatis also came late to Switzerland, because he celebrated his daughter's first birthday on Cyprus. He faced Becker in the first round. The German had a start advantage because he passed through the qualifiers, but both players had problems with return.

Baghdatis was the first to lead. He made a break for 4-3, and then lost a service. The set ended with a tie-break where 18 points have been played. Of course, both of them had their chances, but the Cypriot used the third set ball. It improved his self-confidence and he made a five won games series. Becker only managed to get a honorary game.

- I knew Baghdatis would be an uncomfortable opponent. He knows his way around the hardcourt, but fortunately, I played well - the Argentinian said after the match in Tokyo, his first match after New York at the time.

It is more a question for a sports psychologist, but for some reason Baghdatis plays his best tennis against the best players. This is probably because he is under no pressure to win, and relaxes, and then he is a Top 20 player for sure. He has a long match history vs Del Potro. In their five official matches he was left without a set only once, and even then they played two extended sets, so he has the game. The Argentinian did not impress yesterday, he needs more time to adjust, and this is a new chance for the Cypriot. I'll be going for a set this time, not the handicap, as I believe he will win a set. In case the match goes to three sets, who knows how he will react if he wastes a chance to win once again.
