Grigor Dimitrov - Alexandr Dolgopolov (6:3 6:2)

Dolgopolov used two days off to visit his girlfriend in France

  • Published:

Even though the Ukrainian is defending a lot of important points this week, he found time for a short private trip to France. Dimitrov took his first ATP title last week but he showed no fatigue in the match against Stepanek. Success is clearly the best motivation

Dolgopolov probably played his best tennis last year in Valencia. He reached the final but decided to defend the points taken here. Maybe the stronger competition in Spain scared him. He asked for an invitation for Basel and got it. Even though he has a significantly lower ranking now he still attracts a lot of audience to his matches.

The Ukrainian met with De Schepper in the first round. Even though the French is a tough left handed server, his game on the return play is not on the same level, especially on a level of play such as this and against a player like Dolgopolov who throws his balls very low when serving. The French couldn't get used to a serve like that. The Ukrainian didn't let him a single break-point chance. Dolgopolov didn't reach a lot of chances on his return either but he took most of the given ones and that is very important in a match of good serves. He got his win with a break per set, one could say it was a routine play.

Even though this tournament is important for him, he knew he would have a two day break until the second match so he decided to go on a short trip. He bragged over the social network with a picture that shows he went to visit his girlfriend in France.

Dimitrov also made some changes because of his girlfriend. He cancelled his cooperation with the tennis academy in Sweden and decided to make warm Los Angeles his base. Of course, the reason fro this is to be closer to Sharapova, who practices and lives there. We read more about his private life than we did about his tennis lately, but Dimitrov shook things up last week. He won his first ATP title in Stockholm, the same city where he used to practice before.

He probably came back from Sweden tired, but it seems that success is the best motivation. In Basel he played against the dangerous Stepanek in the first round. The experienced Czech lost to Haas last week after having 12 straight indoor tournament wins. He had some problems with a sore throat in Vienna and it seems that it left a mark on his game.

The Bulgarian served well from the beginning of the match. He took 89% of points on his first serve, had 9 aces and didn't lose his serve once, but that didn't decide the outcome of the match. The Czech practically played without his first serve. He was often depending on his second serve and made 5 double faults mostly due to taking chances on his second serve. It was enough for Dimitrov to reach eight break-point chances and make use of half of them. He now awaits Dolgopolov and will have a tougher job there. The Ukrainian has a motive for this week since he defends a lot of points and he is probably in a good mood because he just got back from visiting his girlfriend in the middle of the tournament. Players like him can only benefit from that. Let's note that Dolgopolov won the title in Umag a few years ago even though he had an equally successful nightlife that week.

Dimitrov won his first ATP title last week, and he demolished Stepanek here. The experienced Czech complained of fatigue and cold last week, he had three successful indoor weeks and I believe he came to Basel drained. Dolgopolov is defending a lot of points this week, which means he is motivated. He played a good first round match, which is often key for him. I don't see why Dimitrov is suddenly such a favorite? He won Stockholm last week, but he was a strong favorite in every match until the finale and he was completely out of form before Sweden. The Ukrainian is a player of outbursts and I believe he can win a set. I wouldn't be surprised if they were a lot of oscillation, so I don't recommend the handicap. Anyway, he is underestimated here and he should at least win a set. To those braver, I recommend the Ukrainian's win.
