Denis Istomin - Roger Federer (6:4 3:6 2:6)

The Swiss really can't complain about the draw

  • Published:

Federer failed to convert 9 break points in the first round, but he defeated Mannarino comfortably for the fourth time in his career. He's got a very positive history of head-to-heads against Istomin, too. The Uzbek has won more than three games only once in seven sets.

It's hard to remember the last time Federer had so many break points as he did in the first round in Basel. He had 13 in 9 returning games. Although this is encouraging for Federer, who wasn't returning well in Asia, this time it was due to an easy draw. Mannarino is not a poor indoor player, but his game style suits the Swiss perfectly. Fast rallies without major changes, a bit of spin and lots of short balls were just what the Swiss' fans wanted.

Federer went 2-0 up in the first set, but the Frenchman broke right back. After that, Mannarino was barely able to survive. Although he saved 9 break points, he lost easily in 78 minutes. The Swiss won 88% of first serve points and didn't face a single break point after he was broken at the beginning of the first set.

- I think it was a pretty good first round performance. I was really positive throughout the match, I played aggressively and served well. I played the kind of game I'd like to be playing throughout the rest of the week - said Federer, satisfied after his first challenge at a tournament where he did well in the previous years.

- Everything kind of started for me here so Basel is a special tournament in my schedule. I have to be careful not to put too much pressure on myself. The good news is the fact that I've been playing well here for years now so there's less pressure. I really enjoy playing in my town.

Istomin also had troubles with converting break points and that's why he barely won although he should've won more easily. The Uzbek has problems with return games and last week he lost a close match against Karlovic. Zeballos is not a great server, but he saved stunning 14 break points.

The Argentinian has been playing below par for most of the season and it' just a matter of time before he returns to challenger level. His ranking is still keeping him at this level, but that's far from reality. Istomin saved two break points at the beginning, but later on he was the one who posed the threat. He missed his chances and even faced a break point, but then he broke, just when everyone expected a tie-break.

Zeballos broke first in the second set, but Istomin broke straight back. The Argentinian faced break, even match, points in his following three service games. The Uzbek had 5 match points in the 12th game. He didn't break, but at least he wasn't broken. He won the tie-break without dropping a point on his serve.

It's not certain whether Istomin will be able to do better than Mannarino against Federer. Their previous meetings have been pretty one-sided. Federer has won all four, but he has lost more than three games in a set only once in eight sets played. It all seems really similar to the match against Mannarino. And we all saw how Federer disposed of him in the first round.

Federer took advantage of the favorable draw in the first round, and he'll do the same here. Istomin and him met four times so far, and Istomin managed to win more than three games only once in seven sets they played. Their last head to head match took place at Indian Wells. Istomin didn't have a single break point opportunity and lost his service game three times. It happened in the first round when Federer usually tends to experiment with his game. Regardless of that, his win was very convincing. Istomin is playing aggressively, but flat and with no changes in the pace, which suits Federer well. Isomin forfeited once, but never managed to overcome this handicap. Federer was the second one to serve in the first round match, but still managed to overcome it. I don's see how Istomin can reach a break today. He needed 12 break points to win two breaks against Zeballos, but he will struggle greatly with his serve, because Federer will have no problem neutralizing it. All in all, Istomin's game style suits him.
