Roger Federer - Philipp Kohlschreiber (6:3 6:4)

Federer: I am happy because I'm playing good tennis again

  • Published:

The Swiss secured London with his win against Anderson and he is now playing for himself. Judging by his statements, he is really motivated. Kohlschreiber broke Haas's dreams of London with two wins in a row, but he has only won a single set against Federer in his career

For many people, Federer is the best player of all time, even though such categories are not always fortunate. The Swiss has had many finals and great matches but he hasn't felt the pressure as he did against Anderson in a while. Not because of the opponent but because of the fact that this was a do-or-die match for him. A win would take him to London, something that he used to secure several months before Paris.

At his very entrance to the arena, he heard ovations that only domestic players can hope for. Anderson was also aware of the importance of this match and seemed frightened for the better part of it. The Swiss opened the match with a break and this only helped him loosen up. He held his serve and won the first set and when he got to 5-1 in the second set, everyone just couldn't wait to stand up and start clapping. However, Anderson obviously didn't like that and he gave it all and almost turned the match around. He got a break and had the chance to get back at 5-5. However, Federer saved two break-points and finished the match without the drama that was already knocking at the door.

- I feel great and I am really happy. I have a tough year behind me and this really means a lot to me. Reaching London was one of my goals at the start of this season and it was a real pleasure reaching this goal in this manner - said Federer upon securing London and added:

- There will be no slowing down. I want the best possible result here and I hope it will be an introduction for a good performance in London.

Tsonga and Gasquet have fought for London among themselves. Wawrinka is still and the race, and Federer was in the race for the final tournament of the season, reserved for the best players. What connects these two is the mutual respect and friendship, as much as it is possible between professional players. There is no false friendship between Kohlschreiber and Haas, also compatriots. Too much was said over the Davis Cup team and they have too many grudges against each other.

Haas has spent the last two weeks chasing the result to catch the last train for London. He crashed out on both occasions, and both times against his compatriot. Last week Haas took the first set and lost, this week Kohlschreiber  didn't even give him that tiny satisfaction. Haas did get six break-points but he didn't convert a single one and he lost his serve four times. Two in each set for a defeat after 73 minutes of play.

Federer and Kohlschreiber have played seven times so far and the German has only got a single set. The Swiss took care of his biggest piece of business and now he can relax, but his latest statement suggests there will be no rest:

- I feel really good again, probably the first time ever since maybe Dubai. This is a good thing. I’m happy that I can play this way right now.

Such low odds on Federer are probably a reflection of the importance of yesterday's match. The Swiss played the Basel finals last week and he needed a win here to qualify for London. Judging by his mood, I don't think he will stop now. He is not a player who wears himself down and he was quite energetic against Anderson. Now he's finally got his form and he seems to be enjoying the game. Kohlschreiber has never covered this spread and had seven chances. He only took the set once in the tie-break. It's normal for him, he shows too much respect and this will cost him the win. This handicap could go through with a single break and I consider this to be a very good wager. Even if Federer plays below expectations, I think the German will "find a way" to help him. It has always been this way. Even in Cincinnati, when Federer was having more problems than now.
