Rafael Nadal - Novak Đoković (3:6 4:6)

The match between the best players to end the season

  • Published:

Both players reached the finals without losing a match. Nadal will try to become the third Spaniard with the Masters title, while Djokovic is going for his title from this tournament. Both players have shown to be unmatched this season and London confirmed that

To call the match between Nadal and Federer the tennis derby of all derbies is like advertising a band well past its prime who are just living of old glory. Perhaps an exaggeration, but Federer has had only two Top 10 wins en route to London. He got his second in Paris, i.e. some 10 days ago. In addition, the head-to-head ratio between the Swiss and the Spaniard says a lot about this rivalry.

Luckily for the fans and the tennis itself, Federer has been playing better than on 90 % of the tournaments this season. Against Del Potro, he showed that he can get back into the match. Against Nadal, he was the first to get a break on the return. He had a break-point and an open parallel on his favorite forehand. He missed in in the same way Gasquet misses these chances against him. Nadal saved 3 break-points in this game using the same recipe - a serve that puts Federer out of court and then the forehand spin on the other side without too many risk. Nothing spectacular from Rafa, but enough to win in two sets. Federer's errors took their toll once again. The Spaniard had 4/4 on break-points, which clearly illustrates the mental distribution of power on the court.

- I think Roger's been playing very aggressively. His serve was great on the start and I think at 4-4 he did better than me. The crucial moment was the game at 5-5 when I didn't use my serve to take the set. After that I got a new break and I think this turned the match to may advantage - Nadal was modest after his as usual and he complimented the Swiss whom he has been beating on most occasions for years now.

Federer didn't make a big deal out of it. He got into the semi-finals, passed a strong group and this is result is not too bad, especially if we look at it from the perspective of the entire season. He hasn't find the right shots at the right time and that's why he lost, which he admitted at the end. Nadal got his first Masters' win against Federer as he's lost the two matches in London and two in Shanghai, the venue for this competition before it was moved to Great Britain.

The second Swiss player left London before the finals. Wawrinka will not be given a chance to thank Nadal for putting him into the semi-finals when he beat Berdych. Even though a good match was expected, considering Djokovic and Wawrinka have played two great matches this season, this did not happen. In fact, this was a Paris re-run in which the second player of the world showed the Swiss he still has a lot work to do if he wants to beat him.

Wawrinka got the first break but won only 3 games by the end of the set. It is somewhat scary to see just how well Novak is playing, even though he apparently isn't at his top level. A combination of fanatic defensive with his trademarks slides and attacking tennis on softer balls was too much for his opponent once again. Wawrinka was left with no choice but to attack. And attack he did and he made mistakes. In the end he concluded:

One break isn't enough. Especially not at the start, and especially not against Novak.

The Swiss also added that he didn't have enough energy and this is the most dangerous thing against Djokovic. On the other hand, the second player of the world has made  a great transformation after the weak last match of his group and he showed what he's like when he's motivated.

- I hope I can transfer my form into the finals. I think this was my best match in London. Best by far, and I felt great on the court.

The finals bring us two best players in the world. It seems that the only indoor arena to bring these two together is London. The Spaniard won three years ago in the group, and the Serbian player won a year before that. This time, they both got into good form near the and and have once again shown that they are unmatched in the world today. They came to this finals without losing a match. Nadal ensured his No.1 position at the end of the season but Djokovic has 21 wins in a row. He hasn't been defeated since the US Open finals.

- This finals will be great and I believe the crowd will enjoy every minute of it. I think our rivalry is very interesting but there are no secrets between us - said Novak and added:

- We've both had a great season, especially him. He ended the season as No.1 and quite deservedly so. I think this is a tournament both of us want to win. A title at the end of the season is really great, especially since this one features the cream of our sport.

This is only the fifth time in the 44-year long history of this tournament that the first and the second tennis player in the world meet. Nadal will try to be the third Spaniard in the history to get this title, the last after Corretja in 1998. Djokovic is looking for his third Masters and that would put him among the elite crowd that is lead by Federer with 6 titles of this type.

- It is really great to win against Federer, but for me it's more important to get a chance to win the last tournament of the season - said Nadal and added:

- I hope I am ready for the last match of the season because I know it will be tough. I will do my best and hope it will be enough.

It is hard to get a spectacular statement from Rafa. He's always very careful and respectful ahead of matches like these. Before the start of the tournament, Djokovic was the absolute favorite. Nadal also got to the finals without a defeat, but from a markedly easier group. The court and the conditions are better for the Serb. There is also the undefeated run since the US Open, a run that started after Nadal beat him. He lost the race for the first place at the end of the season but he still has a chance of lifting the trophy here. Then there is also the Davis Cup finals. In any case a thoroughly deserved finals for both of them. At this moment, these are the two best players in the world by far.

Before this tournament started, the odds on Nadal not winning the title were @1,3. He got the easier group, got to the finals without a single defeat and beat Federer yesterday but I still think the Spaniard will not get his first Masters title. Federer didn't have the usual problems against Nadal for one simple reason. Top spins here are not as problematic as on the open courts. Federer lost because he lacked confidence and the quality when it was most important. Djokovic has that. He was in a far stronger group and was very focused yesterday. He seemed quite satisfied after the match. And most importantly, I think Nadal cannot do better than what he's doing now while you can still see some room for improvement with the Serbian player. Djokovic is going for his 3rd title, he has a run of 21 wins and his conversion from passive to active game is much better than Nadal's, especially indoors.
