Sam Querrey - Vasek Pospisil

The injured Canadian has traveled 18 hours to reach Sydne

Pospisil has quite a few injuries and his back seems to be the biggest problem. He got the ranking of his career and the seed at the Australian Open so there is a huge chance he will forfeit this tournament

While Serena was dominating the women's tennis last year, her male compatriots were raking in defeats one after another. Their media were filled with criticism, especially when the second round of the US Open was left without a domestic representative. One of the players that was expected to do more was definitely Sam Querrey. He finished his season earlier than expected as he got injured in Shanghai but the results were a much bigger problem.

Even though he had a long and hard road since his elbow operation (2011), he will want to forget his last year. He started this one as the 46th player which is his weakest start since 2007. As he says, his biggest flop last season were small tournaments and he does not want to repeat that, but his coach sees the problem differently.

- Sam doesn't have a Grand Slam quarter-finals and that's crucial. He has to focus on the biggest tournaments. The problem is that he doesn't have high expectations from these tournaments. He does have them on smaller ones and it should be the other way around.

Apart from his injury and poor run of form, he's had some private problems. He broke off his engagement and later admitted this affected him a lot. Unlike most coaches which praise their protegees, as they are their employees, David Nainkin said that Sam wanted a shorter way out at one point. The reason for that is a great start of his career as he reached Top 20 very early. These things change throughout the years.

Pospisil has started the season with a semi-final, but he has no reason to be too happy. He had to forfeit the semi-finals match against Wawrinka just when the things could have become complicated which is what the Swiss player admitted as well:

- It was very difficult playing against him. He's a great player and I'm really sorry about his injury. The most important thing is that he will be ready for Australian Open as that is the most important thing.

Young player's staff think the same. Even though they've decided to make the 18-hour journey from India to Australia, the decision on his participation will be made right before the match. The certainly won't run the risk of getting a major injury ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season. It seems this is the end of the young player's problems. His left ankle was heavily bandaged and had kinesio tape on his back and left knee. The good new is that he has the best ranking of his career and he got into Top 30. This means he will be one of the seeds at the Australian Open and it would be a real shame if he missed it because of injury.

Pospisil has forfeited the semi-finals against Wawrinka in India. He's had an active result in the second set but his back could no longer take it. In addition to his back, he also has some problems with his ankle and he had to wear a kinesiological tape on his knee. Not only that, he traveled 18 hours from India and he will hardly give his stand-out performance here. With his points last week, he secured the status of the seed at the Australian open next week and he has no reason to force this one. I expected him to give up here, and he might as well do so, but it seems like he will play here just to get things over with. Querrey needs to play some matches, he can hold his serve and everything points to his win, and this handicap can go through with a single break.
