Radek Stepanek - Blaž Kavčič (7:6 6:4 1:6 0:2) forf.

Kavčič: I have had the best pre-season of my career

  • Published:

The Slovenian player has played two qualifications before this tournament. He showed in Sydney that his form is getting back to his desired level, but the same can be said for Stepanek who took a set against Stepanek who went on to win the title

The average age of Top 100 is 27 and the 35-year-old Stepanek certainly increases this figure as he is still a major figure in the tennis of today. He ended the last season by defending the Davis Cup title where he won the decisive match, just like the year before that. He and Berdych are the best Davis Cup pair and they have been a part of the Masters in London for years. He started the season at the Hopman Cup where he represented the Czech Republic with Kvitova.

- The competition served its purpose. I got a few matches in a good competition and we played in front of a lot of Czech fans which only completed the mood.

The Czech has always had a reputation of a debonair. His marriage with Vaidisova, a former player, is over and the reason for that is probably Kvitova with whom he is currently in a relationship. But, let's get back to tennis. He got a single ATP match before the first Grand Slam of the season. He got through against Groth in Sydney who was two points away from a win, both on his serve. After that, he beat the clay player Ramos and then he was stopped by Del Potro who went on to win the title:

- Radek has radically improved his second-set performance and he deserved to get the third set. I stayed positive, I waited for my chance and played two great points at the start of the third set, in the crucial moment. That decided the match.

The Czech veteran is defending the third round but judging by the mood of the Slovenian player, his task will not be easy. Kavčić is still not in Top 100 and has spent most of last season around his current position. He was even dropped out of Top 135 by the end of the summer but that's not the real situation. He used to be the only Slovenian in Top 100 and then the wave started with two more players.

- Perhaps these new courts in Slovenia are crucial? I am joking, of course. Perhaps getting into Top 100 was crucial as no one believed that was possible before that. I showed it was possible and now we have two more players and this motivates me - he commented the ascend of the Slovenian tennis last year.

The situation has changed. Žemlja is having health-related problems, Bedene keep having problem with his left wrist and Blaž is fighting to get back to his old spots. His latest performances give him something to be optimistic about. After the Sydney qualifications, he beat Nieminen and gave Tomic a hard time.

- I saw in Doha that I was well-prepared, that I'm playing well. I lost against Gojowczyk but we saw what the German did in the main tournament. He will get into Top 50 very soon if he keeps playing like that - said Kavčić and then explained the advantage of playing in Dubai:

- The best possible preparations as I trained with the best every day. The weather was ideal and these was my best pre-season. I played great against Nieminen while I did somewhat worse against Tomic. That's why I lost, but the game was there.

The Slovenian player ended up on IV after a marathon match against Duckworth. He is better prepared this time and he wished he didn't play against domestic players and Top 15 players. His wish came true.

Kavčič often performs best as an outsider. One time, he said that he plays his best tennis when he chases the result, that's his mind set. He is currently below the radar after having a poor season last year but he has prepared quite well for this one. He says, the preparations have been the best of his career. His base is in Dubai where lots of top-tier players prepare. He was knocked out of the qualifiers in Doha but Gojowczyk was great then. After all, the German did reach the semi-finals. Kavčić reached the quarter-finals and his performance reminds me of his good old days. He is full of confidence and can give Stepanek a hard time. The Czech has a reputation as a good outsider. He took a set against Del Potro despite barely beating Groth in the previous match. He was two points away from a defeat. I'm not sure Stepanek can win this one at all. He had blunders against weaker opponents but the Slovenian is definitely underrated. This match will probably no end in three sets.
