Andreas Haider-Maurer - Jiri Vesely (4:6 6:7)

Vesely cancelled the doubles due to back

  • Published:

Haider is moving to clay next week but he showed his motivation against Hajek. Convincing in the first set and a turnaround in the second. Vesely had the serve to take the match and a double break. He asked for the physio's help and barely won the match in the tie-break

The match between Ungur and Vesely was supposed to be the clash of two clay players that can surprise you on hard court. Even though Copil can regularly serve well over 200 km/h, he struggled in rallies and Ungur made use of that. He practically served his way to a win. He didn't lose a single serve in this match and lost the first serve against Vesely.

Vesely had a 3-0 lead and three consecutive break points for double break. Ungur won five points in a row, got the serve back, and got a chance to take the lead with a break. The Czech players saved the break point and then made a new break. So, the match developed as if it were a slow clay and not an indoor match in which Sijsling hasn't lost the serve in two matches.

Even though young Czech won the first set and got a 5-2 lead through double break in the second set, that was not the end of the drama. Vesely had some trouble with his back and he asked for his physio's help. The problem was obviously not small as he missed out on two match-serves. The Romanian got into tie-break and had only himself to blame for missing out on a good situation. He made a few errors and Vesely somehow got the win.

Haider started the season without a coach. The Austrian is not prone to long-term co-operations and he often employs his brother in this position and that was the case this time. Last year, he played eight tournaments after winning the challenger in Brasov and never passed the round 2. However, this was not the reason to end the co-operation.

- Last year, I played until the end of the season which means I started the preparations for this one very late. Coach Nystrom asked by to play the qualifications of Australia. That was his condition to continue the co-operation. I didn't accept it and we decided to part ways -Haider explained his reasons and added:

- I haven't been successful in Australia in recent years. I realized I need longer preparations because I will play lots of tournaments this season, too. That's why I had to be well-prepared and that is the reason why I started the season so late.

This is the first tournament for the Austrian and the motivation is questionable as he is going to South America next week for a series of clay tournaments. He had some problems against Kern and the German took a set against him but Haider responded very well in the second set. He was even better against Hajek. He dominated the serve in the first set. He saved both break-points and realized half of his chances. The second set didn't start too well. The experienced Czech opened with a break but Haider showed his intention was to stay in Hielbronn. He returned the break and avoided the tie-break roulette with another break. A convincing win considering the almost perfect break-point realization (4/6).

Vesely and Haider have played twice. Vesely won the match on home court but the Austrian  won the more important match Even though he had some injury problems, he won the ATP match in Umag in two sets. The Czech's back will play the most important part here. Vesely cancelled the doubles tournament because of his back and his readiness for this match is questionable.

Vesely had the set with 5-2 and a double break. After that he asked for the physio's help because of his back. He lost both serves to win the match and only Ungur's errors helped him win the tie-break somehow. He cancelled the doubles tournament for the same reason so I don't believe he can play the whole match here or win it. Considering the lack of bookmakers (or the limits for the bet), the "1st ball" rule gives you a good choice with the bookies that acknowledge a win after the first set has been played.
