Milos Raonic - Alejandro Falla (6:4 6:3)

Raonic won without getting a break chance

  • Published:

The Canadian played for two and a half hours without a single chance on his return but he won both tie-breaks. Falla came back from 5-2 in the third set, saved a match point and beat Janowicz, another tall rocket-server

According to the information from the Canadian media, Raonic started training late. He would probably pause for another week or so but this is not a month to be missed. Two huge tournaments, the biggest after the Grand Slams, are often the key and Raonic decided to play. Considering the fact that he is recovering from injury and that he hasn't played since Australia, a win was all that mattered.

The Canadian scored 33 aces with 90% of points on his first serve. The problem was that in the two and a half hours of the match, he didn't get a single break chance. Vasselin had only 3 aces so h won all 17 serve games without a problem. The Frenchman got the only break in the match but he lost two tie-breaks.

- I served well and that got me out - admitted the Canadian.

- I know holding the serve on the return would be crucial as I did nothing on the return. Even when I played a few good points, I made several errors afterwards over and over again. I knew it would be tight and I won eventually.

Falla had an ideal preparation for this match as he played another tall player with a great serve. Like Raonic, Janowicz also struggled with injury at the start of the season and still hasn't managed to get into the right rhythm. Regardless of that, he only has himself to blame for his defeat as he made a mistake that Falla used well.

The Colombian won the first set. He used almost every point that the Pole had to start with the second serve. He won 3/4 of those points on his serve, one of which through a double fault. He made two breaks and when he took the lead by 5-2 in the third, the match seemed to be over. Janowicz is usually capable of finishing matches like that but he failed this time. Falla saved a match point in the ninth game and eventually got a win through a tie-break. He won one point less than the Pole, but it's a small comfort for Janowicz.

Even though Falla cannot hold the serve like Vasselin, perhaps he will be more dangerous on the return. Raonic is not likely to improve after only 1 match, which is his attitude as well, considering the fact that he's been out for a while.

- It's not about the confidence, but a lack of playing and matches. This was practically my first match this season without pain and disruption. Now it's important to get into the rhythm.

The Colombian has struggled with injuries a lot in the past few months. After all, he forfeited two matches in a row and complained about his poor performance last week. He won the second match, which means he is capable, but that's always the case on major tournaments. Everyone can push himself to the limits when it comes to Series 1000.

There's not much to say here. Raonic played the first match for two and a half hours without a single break chance. Vasselin is no great server and he didn't have impressive stats but the Canadian did nothing on his return, as he admitted himself. He has returned to tennis only recently, he has no rhythm and he will focus on his serve. He will need more time to get into the rhythm, while Fall beat Janowicz, another great server. He cam back at 2-5 in the third set, he showed he plays better against huge favorites. I expect Raonic to struggle and probably win, but certainly not in a one-sided match.
