The bet is for Puig to win with 3+ games of a lead. I won't say Pennetta tanked in Monterrey, but she seemed very relaxed after the loss, when she said she can't wait to get home and rest after a tough USA tour. Date took advantage of what was offered there as the Italian made a lot of mistakes. After that she beat Babos, a one-trick player who could not win through sheer power. Puig did not have a tough draw, but impressed. In the first round she won 11 straight games, and in the second did not allow a break point. She was the most impressive player up to the quarterfinal. The conditions suit her, she was in the Top 50 last year, and despite being only 20 years old, she has Top 20 potential. The Japanese is phenomenal, no doubt about it, and has experience on her side here, but that's an empty statement. She hasn't played a WTA quarterfinal in almost 4 years. Vekić beat her in Miami, Shvedova left her without a game won in the third set a month ago. She complains of the heat and humidity, and a full week in play isn't easy at her age. Puig has the firepower to impose herself, and I believe the Japanese will struggle to find the strength as the match draws longer. That's why I'm taking the handicap, as Puig can cover it even if there is a third set.
