Magdalena Rybarikova - Ayumi Morita (6:4) forf.

Morita: I didn't expect a win this week

  • Published:

The Japanese played here first tournament since Australian Open and saved two match points against Niculescu. Rybarikova will try to get two consecutive WTA wins for the first time this season. She beat Govortsova who converted only 3 out of 11 break chances

Every comeback is difficult and the feeling on the court and health are often more important than the result itself. So, Morita was happy after her win, but mostly because she managed to hold out throughout the entire match. And what a match. Tie-break in the third set usually implies drama and this was true in this case as Morita saved a match-point before getting the third win from as many games against Niculescu. Just to reiterate, she hadn't played since Australian Open.

- This was my first tournament after two and a half months. I rested after the Australian Open. My hip and wrist prevented me from training for a long time. At this moment, I am not sure what to expect from my performance - said Morita ahead of the tournament and then complained about the heat after spending several months in her cold homeland.

We saw five breaks in the first set. The Japanese did better in that rhythm and then she took a 2-0 lead in the second. She won only one more game until the end of the set and then almost missed out on a one-break advantage in the third set. Niculescu got her match serve and two match points. The Japanese saved them, got into the tie-break and took all four Niculescu's serves.

- I have to admit I didn't expect a win this week. Of course, there are many more things I have to work on, such as my movement. At some points, my reaction was too slow which left a mark on me, but I have had enough time to rest. Of course, I am very happy, especially after saving two match-points - said Morita after the first round.

Rybarikova and Govortsova played a solid match. Unlike some players, they managed to play well in the tricky conditions. Both play an attacking game and don't have a problem with high balls but the Slovakian made better use of her chances. She converted 5 out of 8 chances while the Belarus player used only 3 out of 11. In the third set, Rybarikova used both chances she had, while Govortsova converted none. This is a result of a poor confidence that Govortsova talked about before the tournament.

Govortsova started the match with 2-0. It didn't help her as she only won one more game until the end of the set. In the second, the Slovakian lost her serve twice but then saved both break chances in the third. After the initial 2-2, she took four games in a row and won the match. In the end, she had 9 points more and a better efficiency on her first serve. Govortsova did better on her second but she made very little use of her chances.

Rybarikova is now facing Morita who may be called a desirable draw. The Japanese said she has no expectations from this week and was one point away from a defeat in the first round. On the other hand, the Slovakian has not had two consecutive WTA wins this season and the last time she got them was in Tokio. If nothing else, she won the only head-to-head. It was tight, but Rybarikova won both tie-breaks.

Morita played the first match of the Australian Open. She injured her hip and a problem with her wrist so she didn't train too much. She said herself that she has no expectations from this week. She beat Niculescu after saving two match points. The Romanian suits her and this was her third win in three H2H's. The Japanese is technically strong and knows how to play against her. Now she's facing Rybarikova who will not try to outwit her. Her powerful game can impose the rhythm that Morita cannot match at the moment. The Japanese has been out of action for too long while the Slovakian showed the conditions suit her. That's why this handicap seems very well, especially as it can be covered in three sets, should something like that even happen.
