Novak Đoković - Gilles Simon (6:4 6:2 6:4)

Simon allowed only one break chance in two matches

  • Published:

Đoković was on the verge of getting into the fifth set. He admitted he was nervous against Stepanek, a tricky player with a good grass game. Simon doesn't have that but his aggressive performances have been impressive as has been his untouchable serve. He showed against Nadal in Rome that he can be dangerous when his arm relaxes

Even though Đoković lost only five games in the first match, it was clear to everyone that Golubev was not a real test, especially not for the No.2 player in the world. The Kazakh came to Wimbledon with almost no wins on grass, but Stepanek was a completely different story. The Czech has been dangerous on this surface for years and he beat Murray in Queens a few weeks ago and Murray had 19 consecutive wins on grass.

Nole almost lot the first set. He saved two consecutive break chances at 4-4 and then converted the third set chance. He was up by 2-0 but the Czech just wouldn't give up. He enjoyed every minute of it and almost got back in the match, but he just lacked that small stroke of sports luck. He was on his knees during the last point, praying for the ball to go in. But it didn't and Novak won the fourth set and the match with it.

- I expected a difficult match. Stepanek is a dangerous player on this surface and has much more grass matches this season. You have to know that I came to Wimbledon without a preparation match. I got through in the first set but I played really well in the second. The third set was something special. Many missed chances, including 5-2 in tie-break. I made many huge mistakes but it was all due to lack of grass matches - Đoković commented his unconvincing performance in the second round.

It seems almost incredible that Radek almost reached the fifth set without converting a single break chance. Novak saved all 5 and won 75% of points on the net. He had more winners, less unforced errors and twice as many aces. But he barely celebrated in the end.

- I was nervous. I knew my opponent was brimming with confidence, after all, he beat Murray in Queens, which is no small matter. I know he played without any pressure, he has a lot of experience and as we saw, he got the fans rooting for him. We all know he likes the big stage - the first seed tried to explain the reason for this match being as tight as it was.

Objectively speaking, Đoković simply needs more grass matches. Stepanek feels very comfortable in these conditions and he was very close to getting the fifth set. Now Đoković is facing a completely different type of opponent, but Simon is braver now than he's ever been.

The Frenchman was impressive in the first round. Even though he was up against a challenger player, he took over the initiative and looked for points. That's a change from his recent performances where he often tried to make us of his opponents' mistakes. He showed against Haase that this new attitude was not just an experiment. A far more dangerous opponent but the effect was the same. He won 85% of points on the first serve, 70% on the second and two thirds of points on the net (20/30). He didn't allow for a break chances and that's a sign of this new aggression.

- Simon had a very tricky serve and was strong from the baseline. He's very fast, especially when the opponent attacks. In addition, his balls are very deep. Simply put, he was a better player than me - the Dutchman complimented Simon and  he was himself happy with the performance:

- I played a big match. Not only did I not have to save any break chances, I didn't allow for equalization on my serve. I definitely felt superior. I have been playing my best tennis lately, but I have more problems than before physically handling some tasks so the fluctuations are more painful.

Head-to-head score is very clear. Simon won the first match and Đoković won the following six. In addition, the first seed has won last 5 sets in a row and they played on hard surface ever time. Despite this domination, one gets the impression that Simon might be a tricky obstacle here. Especially if he puts in another attacking performance. Nadal felt how dangerous he can be in Rome when he lost two points.

I have often criticized Simon as I know how talented he is. Maybe he has realized that he cannot keep relying on defense and he got back to his roots. When he attacks, he's impressive. He scored 50 winners in Rome against Nadal and the conditions were very cold and slow. Rafa couldn't come anywhere near him for two sets. He won two matches here, offering 1 break chance in the process. The Frenchman takes the risks, plays fast, chases the ball and hits the ball low and flat In addition, his serve is much better than it might seem at first, as Haase said himself. Novak hasn't been too good so far. He got drained out after Roland Garros. He got the deserved rest and was focused on some other things. Just to be clear, Đoković is still the main favorite to take the title, but this will be no walk in the park for him. The Frenchman is tricky, Novak is not in the right rhythm and that should be the most apparent at the start.
