Makarova has two wins against Kimiko, but none on grass. The Japanese has shown in Birmignham that she can play an excellent match on grass. In addition to great serve that will not give the Russian too many chances, she hits the ball early, thus denying her opponents some time to react. True, Makarova had a solution for that in their head-to-heads. First she kept her serve games with a wide serve, and she forced the backhand of the Japanese player on the return. She had a good tournament in Eastbourne and she reached the quarterfinals but she doesn't deserve to be such favorite. Kimiko will not offer too much on her serve and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a tie-break in the first set, which should direct this match. A win for Kimiko is not a bad bet for a smaller stake, but a 5.5 game counter-handicap should be even safer.
