Samuel Groth - Mischa Zverev (7:6 7:6)

Zverev lost one service game in qualifying matches

  • Published:

Troicki brought an end to Groth's seven-match winning run. Zverev, on the other hand, reached the main draw through qualifying rounds once again. He was a point or two short of the semifinals in Stuttgart and later said he wished the grass court season lasted longer. The Australian with an extremely powerful serve probably agrees

Things finally started falling into place for Groth as the grass-court season started, given his serve and aggressive game. He went to Manchester immediately and used the Challenger there as a great preparation. He fired almost 40 aces in the first three rounds and lost only one service game. Things weren't working out against Ram but the opponent in the end got injured and retired. Groth went on the win the title even though there were some struggles in the final but they were more of the psychological kind:

- I knew I had the role of the favorite and that I was fighting for the title. That caused some problems for me at the beginning but I managed to get back in the set and played convincingly till the end.

Groth got lucky in Stuttgart as well, as his opponent Stakhovsky won the first set and then got injured, just like Ram in Manchester. The match went on for quite a while because Stakhovsky refused to give up as long as there was any chance. Groth finally converted a break point in the third set, which is when Stakhovsky decided to retire, being only one game short of defeat. A win over Lopez that followed was much more significant since the Spaniard has the reputation of a grass-court specialist. Not even he could stop the bombardment from Gronth's side. Lopez said that it only makes sense that Groth fired the fastest serve ever recorded in an official match. The Australian went on to lose to Troicki, who said he liked playing good servers. After all, it was not a coincidence that the Serbian tied that final and Queens semifinals

- It was very good in Stuttgart and I'm now off to London to practice. I should have played Nottingham qualifiers but I got in he main draw automatically. I hope for another good week ahead of Wimbledon - Groth said.

Mischa Zverev is also a grass-court specialist but he had to reach the main draw through qualifying matches. And he did as expected. Zverez has almost 40 wins on grass court in his carrier and once again proved his quality in Stuttgart. He sailed through qualifying rounds and then beat Thiem and Seppi and nearly Cilic. He just needed a bit more focus. Zverev had the key point in tie-break in his hands but decided not the hit the ball, hoping it would be out but it wasn't.

- It's too bad that the grass-court season is so short. I feel great in those kind of conditions and I liked the Davis Cup-like atmosphere in the stands. I hope I can go on like this - the German said after Stuttgart.

he has proved once again that he has the quality for grass court. He reached another main draw through qualifying matches and then beat third seed Lajovic in the first round, not allowing him a single break point. Zemlja was dealt with next, also without a single break point. A few hours later Zverev knocked out Rola after the first set struggle. He lost the first serve but won the last 8 games in the match. He once again won over 70% of points on both serves.

Grass court conditions are special and the term specialist means a lot here. Zverev is a grass court specialist. He reached main draw through qualifying matches just like in Stuttgart. He was convincing and lost only one serve in three matches but his opponents are better in different conditions which is why thy often lost their service games. I've seen him last week and noticed that he is far behind the baseline when playing great servers. That can worked against those who stay behind but Groth runs inside the court. We need to wait and see how Zverez will eve cop with Groth's serves. On the other hand, he has a tricky left hand and knows how to handle the ball in these conditions. Both are good on grass and both will struggle against opponent's serve. Any kind of games over option is therefore good, especially those regarding the first set while both still look for rhythm on return and before the result of the first set starts affecting the tactics mentally.
