Denmark - Slovenia (2:2)

The Danes want to win and eliminate Slovenia

  • Published:

After they took only one point in the first three matches, the Slovenes announce they'll be playing to win

Only one month after an away game in Ajdovscina, the young Danish representation are hosting Slovenia. Even though one can't say that the Slovenes didn't earn a point from that duel (2-2), the Danes won't have it easy in the fight for the top of the league table. The group isn't easy, there are Bulgaria and Russia, the two teams who want to make it to the playmaking and if the Danes want the same, this is the match they have to win.

- In Slovenia, we were losing 2-1 in the first half, but came back in the second half and tied 2-2, which is a good result. Slovenia didn't have a good start in the qualifiers, but despite having been defeated by Russia, they played well. With three wins, the Russians are the favorites and we're facing an interesting fight. We have a very young team with only five players born in 1992, the rest of them are younger - said coach Thorupp and commented on today's duel:

- This is a very important match and we expect a lot. We're going forward from one match to another and if we beat Slovenia, they're probably out of the game. The last match against them was very difficult, they're a very good team. Their greatest asset is their physical strength and they have great individuals, which we were able to see when they played against us and created numerous chances.

There are a few alternations in Denmark's line up, in comparison to the match in Slovenia. Captain Vestergaard has been hurt and won't be on the back line, while midfielder Olsen has been suspended. The new addition to the team are great striker Falk, who's been a part of the A representation for the last couple of matches, and 17-year-old Bayern midfielder Pierre Emile Højbjerg, they youngest Bayern's player in Bundesliga.

The young Slovenes came to Denmark on Wednesday evening, where they will first try to make up for the bad impression they left at he beginning of the qualifiers. In the first three matches, they won only one point and lost to Estonia in a home match, then to Russia in an away match, and tied 2-2 in the match against Denmark.

- If we repeat the match from the first halftime in Ajdovscina, we can hope for positive outcome. Our point balance is below expectations, which is driving us to win - says coach Tomaz Kavcic.

He doesn't have the standard Koper midfielder Zibert at disposal due to injury, and there have been other problems...

- The doubt about placing Krajnc or Blazic to the center back position is still present. Krajnc is 80 % ready health-wise - explained Kavcic.

Facing the match, the coach remains optimistic:

- We have to play our game, be compact in both stages and at least equally aggressive as they are. We should watch for the balls thrown in from the corner kick or out of bounds, since they're tall and jump well. The more we have the ball in our possession, the easier we'll reach our goal.

Denmark and Slovenia showed that they want to play attractive football in their previous matches and I expect a similar approach by both teams today. Also, both teams played against a very solid Estonia under the margin, while the other two games they played went over the margin of goals scored. The home team can't count on their captain Vestergaard, which is a serious blow for their backline and I believe that the Slovenians can cause a lot of problems today. On the other hand the Danes will be boosted by the return of the excellent striker Falk, who already played for the senior national team and will make their attack even stronger.
I believe that the right bet would be over on goals scored because a tie is not an option for both teams, who have been scoring a lot of goals lately and playing good attacking football.
