St. Mirren - Aberdeen (1:1)

St. Mirrent are simply not playing well

  • Published:

Averdeen are full of confidence after three great consecutive wins, and a few important players and back on the team as well

We pointed out that St. Mirren's coach is under a lot of pressure, and the situation didn't get any better after yet another - fourth consecutive defeat. The Saints won only one point in six so far played matches, and the only thing between them and the bottom of the table is the fact that Heats started the league 15 points behind. St. Mirren did absolutely nothing last round with Hibernian. They didn't have a single attempt in the 90 minutes, and if they keep on going like this, they could soon get even worse than Hearts in the championship table.

- We need to get back to basics. With that I mean we need hard work, to cut out the uncharacteristic mistakes that we are making as individuals - the short pass-backs, the cheap fouls we are giving away, the failure to defend crosses or not matching runs."I believe in my players. We have got guys that have played at international level, who have done great things in the game and won silverware."The only thing that is lacking - and it's a key ingredient - is confidence."But I believe that if we can take care of the small things, the greater things will come. There is a great saying that you have to look after the pennies to look after the pounds and we must get the basics right if we want to turn things around - said coach Lennon.

The home team can't count on left back Grainger who has a one match suspension and the starting line up defender McAuslanda is under question match for the match.

Aberdeen proved they are good by winning against the currently leading team in the championship Aberdeen. That makes it their fifth match without a loss, two Cup matches included. They beat a second division team in the Cup on Wednesday 2-0, and then Partick 3-0 before the Invernesse win. They seem to finally be the team everyone expected them to be years ago.

Coach McInnes, who is the most responsible for the success said:

- There is a good buzz about the place at the moment. It is very rewarding when you get a performance and a result and that is certainly what we got against Falkirk and have got in the last couple of games. We prepared for the game properly and gave them the respect they deserve from their previous performances. We got our rewards for the professionalism we showed in our preparation. "It is a good little period we are on at the moment because we look solid at the back and have a good defensive unit, but we are also carrying a goal threat. The players are all working very hard. We will be playing a St Mirren side who will be desperate to get their first win. They know that one win can start to turn things around. We played them down there at the end of last season and I do not expect the game to be any different from that. They will make it very difficult for us. As for every game we will need to prepare properly and look and their strengths and weaknesses and see where we can exploit those weaknesses.

No other players are out than the ones who are already injured, but the situation is looking up for them too. Important forwards McGinn and midfielder Robertson could be back on the team in a while, just like defender Considine. Midfielders Flood and Clark, and defender Anderson are missing the match as well.

Everything is already said in the match preview - St. Mirren are not playing well at this moment, the team is in confusion and the coach Danny Lennon is under great pressure. The expectations are especially high after last year's surprising win of the League Cup but instead of moving forward, the Saints made two steps backward and are in a very difficult situation.
On the other hand, Aberdeen finally started to play the way fans wanted and expected them to after a few years of disappointment. The squad is almost always among the stronger ones of the league and this season it is noticeable in the field. To score a total of eight goals against Patrick and Falkirk is not easy at all and the win over very good Inverness is another proof that this team has the quality for the top of the table. The mood is great, the team is full of confidence and today they are looking for their third championship win in a row.
If to all that we add the fact that the Saints haven't won against Aberdeen since 2011 (seven draws and won win of Aberdeen since then, the one last season on this stadium) it is clear they will hardly overturn that negative streak. Because of the difference in quality, and especially because so different atmospheres, I believe that the away team can take three points this evening.
