Milan - Udinese (1:0)

Milan await the traditionally uncomfortable Udinese without a couple of key players

  • Published:

Milan have in the last couple of years barely managed to score points against Udinese, and now it will be even harder considering all the important absences they're faced with: Balotelli, El Shaarawy, Mexes and De Jong

Milan are definitely not doing well at the start of the season and it's questionable how long will coach Allegri get to sit on the bench. In seven championship meetings so far, Milan beat only Cagliari and Sampdoria on San Sir, and in even two meetings, the ones against Torino and Bologna, they saved themselves by scoring goals in the final minutes of the meeting. Milan isn't doing well in the Champions League either. Allegri's team beat Celtic more thanks to luck, and in an away match in Amsterdam they were again saved thanks to Balotelli thanks to a penalty kick in the last seconds of the injury time.

Allegri doesn't have it easy because after the defeat in a derby against Juventus they're up against the uncomfortable Udinese, and they'll see mighty Barcelona in the San Siro Stadium. In case Milan doesn't win against Udinese, it's questionable whether Allegri will live to see another week on the red-black's bench.

Allegri is aware that the match against Udinese won't be an easy one:

- We've never had easy matches against them, but very difficult ones. Udinese has great technical values and they have Di Natale in the offense, and he's the one always scoring the difference. They are led by a coach who has demonstrated in his career that he knows how to achieve great things. He deserved to lead one of the greatest teams. We have to be careful and we mustn't be nervous. The situation in the table is not the best one, so we have to keep today's points at home.

The absence situation is worrying for Allegri, prior to the match against Udinese. Because of suspensions he can't count on one of his best stoppers Mexes, and on the important defensive midfielder De Jong, and because of injuries he had to write off the great back De Sciglia and stopper Bonera, and the biggest forward starts Balotelli and El Shaarawy.

During the week Milan was joined by the French national stopper Rami who will definitely serve Allegri, considering that Mexes has to face four more matches because of his suspension. The good news for Milan's coach is the fact that Kaka, Birsa and Silvestre are back into the team, but it is expected that the Brazilian Kaka will start the meeting off at the bench since Allegri himself said in the match preview that he has maximum strength to spend 30 minutes playing.

Udinese are for now looking great in the eyes of their own fans, and bad in away games. This season at away games against Lazi, Chievo and Atlanta, Guidolin's team didn't win a single point which is strange, considering they're traditionally dangerous on host turfs because of their characteristic fast transformation from defense to offense. Milan are a team which suit them because they've lost against them in three out of a total of ten matches, and Milan's three wins were minimal. Next to that, two of those wins were achieved in the last minutes of the match.

Udinese's last away match in San Siro was decided with Balotelli's two goals. He will, because of his injury, miss this match, but Guidolin still doesn't fear Milan:

- Milan were always Milan, even without Balotelli. We think they're concentrated on this match, which isn't strange. They will be determined to reach the points against us. I haven't heard them talking about the Champions League meeting which they will have in a couple of days. We will have to play a better match than in other away games; we need that extra something because they will be determined to create new problems for us. Allegri has very high quality-players, but we are ready for them.

Udinese visitors can't count on the long-injured goalkeeper Brkic who is slowly returning to practicing, and the experienced defender Domizzi. Forward Muriel and midfielder Badu are the only national team players who returned later from Colombia's and Gana's national team gatherings, and didn't participate in Thursday's practice, but both of them are part of the competition for the San Siro meeting. There is a possibility that we'll see Maicousel or Pereyra on Muriel's position, behind captain Di Natale.

The preview underlined the fact that Milan rarely beat Udinese in recent years, and even when they did, it was with minimum difference. In addition to this, Allegri's team have been unconvincing this season, only getting through thanks to last-minute goals, the manager is rumoured to get sacked again and they're facing Barcelona's arrival to San Siro this Tuesday. On top of that, Allegri can't count on several key players. The biggest handicap is missing his best strikers Balotelli, El Shaarawy and Pazzini, and playmaker Kaka isn't 100% fit either. The midfield is missing De Jong, and Mexes, Bonera and De Sciglio are lacking in the defence. Rami arrived, but won't be able to play just yet. All in all, Milan is in quite a pickle and Udinese have been getting better and better. Muriel and Di Natale are a dangerous offensive duo and are definitely capable of causing lots of problems for weakened Milan.
