Mors - Bjerringbro (24:36)

BSV without Kristian Kjelling for six weeks

  • Published:

The Norwegian shooter has had elbow problems, more serious then thought at first, and underwent surgery yesterday. The good news for the away team is the return of the first goalkeeper Jannick Green

Jan Paulsen, a coach who led Mors to semi-finals in the playoff last season, is back on the club's bench, after leaving it due to the dispute about extending his contract at the end of last season. First he lead the team to victory over Ribe-Esbjerg (33-30) and, even though he hadn't been on the bench in away game against KIF Kolding, he was confirmed to be the first coach until the end of the season.

- I am honored because of the way I was accepted and because of the way the conversations have gone during the last couple of days. The desire to finish it successfully was mutual - stated Paulsen, according to Hbold.dk.

This team are different from the one he left behind. There are no important players, game carriers like Balling, Köser, Mørk. A lot depended on the three the previous season and now Paulsen will have to rearrange a team with potential and a lot of young players, a team who didn't have a great season opener and who need a couple of good matches to retrieve their confidence.

They lost 11-18 against Kolding at half time and played a bit faster in the second half. Mors were a constant threat, they scored 23-20 and 26-23 a couple of minutes before the end. It ended with 29-23, but they showed they had what it takes to play against strong rivals. Left back Tobias Ellebaek (on the picture), whom we saw in junior world championship in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was brilliant, with 10 out of Mors' 23 scores.

It's interesting that the first coach (Paulsen) was absent  and the team was lead by assistant Anders Fredsgaard together with three players, captain Søren Pedersen, middle back Jac Karlsson who managed offense and Asbjørn Madsen, who was the defense coach in this case. They had only 13 names in the rotation, since young Tobias Rasmussen, Mads Meldgaard and Tommy Cawsey played the match for the second Mors team. It wasn't so bad in the end, they resisted the strong opponent very well.

Last season, they played two times against BSV in their home hall, they lost the first match 40-29 and the second 27-26. Today, they will have a chance, BSV have been having a lot of problems with injuries and the last player out of the rotation is the greatest star Kristian Kjelling.

- After each match, my elbow was swollen and I had problems lifting the bag up after practice. I got tired of it and surgery was the best option - stated the Norwegian shooter.

He underwent surgery yesterday and it all went according to plan. Kjelling will be out of the game for 6 weeks. Without him in the rotation, young Theis Bagøe will have a lot of minutes on the left back position. He has upped his game and has an important role this season, not only in offense, but in middle defensive block with Kasper Nielsen. It's the result of Jakobsen and Madsen's injuries. Wing Kierkegaard is also injured, as well as goalkeeper Jannick Green and young Sebastian Henneberg.

So, the main coach Claus Uhrenholt has been dealing with a lot of problems. Kjelling hasn't helped him in the match against Tvis Holstebr, even though they lead for the most part, but were defeated in the end. It was their second defeat on their home field this season and third in five rounds. The season didn't start according to expectations, but with so many key players out of the rotation, it doesn't come as a surprise.

- The match against Mors is very important in order to stay on top. We have to keep our composure during all 60 minutes. It will be an exciting challenge, because the atmosphere there is always hot and it's hard to communicate well during the match - said assistant coach Bo Toulstrup.

Another problem for BSV throughout the week has been the national team gathering. Wilbek did some practices, some of which were attended by Mads Christiansen, Kasper Nielsen, Casper Mortensen and goalkeeper Jannick Green from BSV. The good news is Green's return.

In the end, fun fact: BSV scored 200 goals in the last 6 away matches against Mors, which is over 30 in average.

Mors have recorded their first win after coach Paulsen's return, having scored three goals more than Ribe at home. Then - without Paulsen at the helm, as he was still negotiating his contract - they lost to Kolding 29-23 on the road, but put up a good fight, getting to 26-23. They are back home today, there will be a live TV nationwide broadcast, and the atmosphere is always electric in their venue. Paulsen is now fully in charge of the team, he worked with them this week, and they have no major injuries to speak of. Unlike BSV, who are decimated. Their top player Kjelling is out due to elbow surgery, key defensive players Jakobsen and Madsen are also out, as well as wing Kierkegaard, while first-choice goalie Green is back after a little finger fracture. BSV have two away wins, by three goals at Ribe and by six at Ringsted. They also have three defeats, to Kolding and Holstebro at home and at Aalborg away. Everything points to more trouble for BSV, and I don't believe they will win this one convincingly.
