GOG Svendborg - Sonderjyske (26:27)

Clash of undefeated in Gudme

  • Published:

GOG won the second league last season and they are looking great at the start of the season among elite teams and they are a pleasant surprise to many

KIF Kolding won in away match against Tvis Holstebro two days ago and kept their 100% efficiency - 4 wins in 4 games. GOG and Skjern are a game behind, but are the only other two undefeated teams in the league. It is a big surprise since GOG came from the second league, although it dominated there (25 wins in 26 games). Rarely anybody expected them to be so dominant among the elite. They proved their quality in the last league round when they won a road game against respected Arhus (34-29). At the half their lead was 17-11. They have ensured their wins at the half time in practically all three of their games by creating a significant lead which they kept in the second part. Only Skanderborg troubled them a bit in their first home game.

- Of course we played for the win, but we did not dream of such a convincing win - said coach Jakob Larsen for Hbold.dk

- We watched a lot of videos of Arhus goalkeeper Thomle Nielsen because he is the key to their game. That was good for our shooters and Aku Kretzmann, Minik Dahl Hoegh and Niclas Kirkelokke were dominating over home team goalkeeper - explained coach Larsen.

Kreutzmann scored 5, middle back Kenneth Dahl Jørgensen 4, right back Kirkeløkke 3 goals. Their leading scorer was their line man, cadet national team player (just like Kirkeløkke) Lars Hald with 6 goals. In defense they had certain problems with Arhus left back Kasper Olsen (6 goals), but coach Larsen said "we managed to take care of that too".

Right wing Mark Strandgaard scored 4 goals, but his coach revealed that he has only been playing games and has not been training because of a knee injury that bothered him for a while and next week he will undergo meniscus surgery, which means he will not be able to play for a while.

GOG has another cadet national team player on that position, Kasper Kildelund, who will obviously play more for the rest of the season. It is important to note that after 3 played games they have two cadet national team players among their top three scorers - Kirkeløkke with 15 goals and Hald with 12.

- I think we have an interesting game ahead of us, a game that will be decided in the last 10 minutes. Fans can expect interesting and dramatic game - said Kenneth Dahl, reported by GOG club webpage.

- They are undefeated like we are, they won an important point against Holstebro. I think they are a very good team with many good players. If I had to mention anyone I would emphasize their line men Anders Zachariassen who is a player that can not be ignored. In the first three games he scored 21 goals in 24 attempts and all three times was chosen into the best team of that round. They have Anders Petersen on the goal, a player that is at the top of the league for years. Simon Kristiansen came from BSV and he has a killer left hand and plays with much confidence.

GOG defense was superb so far. It should be noted that Arhus was significantly weakened since their starting middle back Henrik Hansen did not play and today their defense will be under a lot of pressure since Sønderjyske is a well-balanced team and are surely better team than Nordsjealland and Skanderborg, teams GOG played against in the first two rounds.

Sønderjyske was seen as a potential pleasant surprise at the start of the season. In the first three league rounds they have confirmed that. After a draw against strong Holstebro they dominated at home against Mors and won 32-18 and Mors coach Anders Thomsen did not survive that defeat and was fired immediately after that.

- A big surprise, to be more exact, very surprising result. We had a day when everything went in, it was almost unreal - said Morten Henriksen for Hbold.dk.

At halftime we have seen a rarely seen score - 17-5.

Mors tried to change defense but Sønderjyske did not stop. Henriksen especially mentioned that fact, they did not slow down despite their great lead. Zachariassen was their first scorer with 6 goals and goalie Petersen was with him voted in the best team of that round because of his save efficiency (50%).

- Sønderjyske has a wide selection of players with experienced players such as Snorry Gudjonsson and Kasper Jorgensen and they have a lot of rotation options. I believe they have 8 players in the back line, which means many options - said visiting team coach.

- It will be a challenge in many game segments, we have to be especially good in what we did good so far. It is important for us to use all of our chances and to run back to the defense. GOG trademark has always been strong defense and fantastic breakaways, we have to find a way to stop that.

The last season second-division team Gudma opened the elite season in style. Three wins out of three matches are a guarantee for quality. They play well, with an excellent defense, but I don't think that this evening they will not have such a huge win like in the past rounds. At the start they had Nordsjaelland who are a completely new team. Then they won against Skanderborg at home, although they had trouble in the second half, while at Arhus they seized the chance of their best player not playing in the match (middle back Hansen). Ahead of today's duel they are left without their first right wing. This place will have to be taken by the cadet national team player Kildelund, and that player wasn't the first option even at the World Championship in Hungary in his generation. GOG has two more cadet players, on the right back and on pivot positions, the future starts of Danish handball, but for now they are still 19-year-olds. Sonderjyske is a different story. They are still undefeated as well and if I would compare the players by positions, it is difficult to give GOG the advantage although they have Snorri Gudjonsson in their ranks. Sonderjyske has a superb goalkeeper, a pivot who was among the best seven of the round in all three rounds, an excellent right back, a very good back line and it is no accident they won against Kiel and Bjerringbro in the preparation matches. In their only away match so far they played 25-25 at strong Holstebro who is not weaker in quality than GOG. From the host ranks as well come announcements that the match will be resolved in the last 10 minutes, with which I completely agree and so I have to take these 2.5 on Sonderjyske.
