Lokomotiv Jaroslav - Medvescak (3:2)

Lokomotiv fired the coach before the Medvescak game

  • Published:

A change of coach could have positive impact on the team that are stronger than Medvescak, who played badly against Severstal, confirming their poor form

After scoring only one win in first six rounds Lokomotiv have fired the coach Tom Row. Yaroslav have lost their last two home games after penalty shootouts, and although they didn't look too bad, they were far from brilliant, and the coach paid the price. Peter Vorobyov was appointed the new coach.

They had difficult opponents last two games, but in reality, Lokomotiv, as the fourth team in the West last season, should win home games easily, whoever comes. The offense and defense were out of sync, and this is what is largely expected from the new coach to fix. A change of coach is known to produce a positive shock with the players, so they might show more than what they had shown under the previous coach. On top of that, they have a perfect opportunity to cure their complexes, the rookies Medvescak who are playing really poorly.

Lokomotiv lost to Spartak after penalty shootouts, they had bad luck and the win could have been theirs, but it didn't happen and they must move on. They played excellent defense in that game, the goalie Sanford had fantastic 97% of saves, but the offense was off, scoring only one goal from 33 shots, and that was when they scored on (only) one of  seven power play chances.

- We have high ambitions this season. We have a strong team and the play must be much better. I wish Tom the best of luck for the rest of his career, but this wasn't the start to the season that we wanted and expected. Lokomotiv must be much better. - The club president Yuri Yakovlev said.

Yakovlev is absolutely right, Lokomotiv is definitely a playoff team with an excellent chance against Medvescak to redeem themselves for bad play in front of their fans. They don't have any problems with injuries or absences, so that should be another reason to play a good game.

Medvescak continued with their bad play in the second away game of the season. Although they claim to learn from mistakes after every game, in reality this isn't happening, and against Severstal in last round they played their worst game of the season.

After they showed a good game against SKA, yet lost convincingly without scoring a goal, against Severstal they looked good only in the first period. In the second they started with foolishness, silly penalties that triggered a turnaround. They allowed four goals in the second, two of them on power play, and one even short-handed, which is a disaster. They really played too roughly, with a total of six penalties, three of which were punished with a goal.

In the last period they allowed two more goals, to conclude a very bad game. The goalie Barry Brust, who was given a chance for the second game in a row, didn't distinguish himself, so Dekanich can be expected in net today. Brust had 83% of saves, which is rather bad, but the out-of-sync defense lines, constantly overhauled by coach French, didn't help him either.

- All credit to Severstal, nothing to take away from them, but I'm looking at my team and I'm worried about our inconsistency and the fact that the guys aren't learning, don't see we can be good when we play our style, that's what can bring success. Against better teams we follow our internal rules strictly, and when we don't do that, we lose focus. We mustn't allow that. - Said Medvescak's coach Mark French.

It seems that French is rotating too much, without standard defensive pairs, looking for new solutions that aren't bringing improvement. If they continue with the Severstal type of game, it doesn't look good for them, as Lokomotiv are a powerful team on a bad run. It's difficult to say who would play on the defense, but Mark Dekanich could be in net after Brust's fiasco. The only injured player, sure to miss the game, is Kyle Klubertanz.

I think there's no team more desirable than Medvescak to cure one's frustrations at the moment. Lokomotiv have changed their coach due to bad results, and this is known to produce a positive shock with the players in most cases. They didn't start the season well and they need a good result urgently to regain their fans' confidence. They have two home losses in a row, which is intolerable for a team like that. They outclass Medvescak considerably, who aren't playing well in Russia, where the rinks are wider, not well suited to their style of play. Furthermore, Medvescak's coach is constantly rotating the lines, especially defense, which is definitely not helping to improve the play. They allowed six goals to Severstal, three to SKA, that could have been more, before that five to Riga, four to Slovan... The defense doesn't look good, there are too many penalties, too many mistakes and Lokomotiv are sure to make them pay. Although they didn't start the season well, they did score three goals each to the strong teams of Donbass and Barys, four to Avtomobilist. Today they have probably the easiest opponent, their imperative to win is huge and there's no room for mistakes. I expect a maximum effort from Lokomotiv, and this seems like a better choice than playing on the win, where the value is low, and their defense is not reliable enough to take the handicap. I don't see Medvescak allowing only two goals, that would be unrealistic, since Lokomotiv are a much better team than them.
