Celje Piv. Laško - Zagreb PPD (26:21)

Balkanian El Clasico might decide the battle for the 3rd position

  • Published:

Celje have a backup from the win against Motor, while Zagreb have been really bad in the away games this season, barely defeating teams like Lovcena and Borca

One of the most interesting games of the rounds will be played in Celje today, a game between the eternal rivals, and the fact that this is one of the key games in the battle for the round of 16 makes it even more interesting. Veszprem and Rhein-Neckar are far away on the top of the group, Zaporozje are third with the very difficult schedule (Veszprem at home, Celje and Zagreb away games), and Celje and Zagreb are equal on the fourth position with three points less than the Ukrainians, and one game less. Zagreb won the game at the beginning of the competition, 24-21, and in case they win again here, it would take them one step closer to the round of 16.

However, Celje will do everything they can to prevent that. Slovenians seem like a better team at the moment, they showed better performances in the Champions League games so far. It's especially true for games against Veszprem, where they gave great resistance to the Hungarian giant in both games. It's questionable whether anyone will manage to leave Hungary with a positive score this season, but Celje were very close to making it happen. Razgor had a 7 meter throw after the game ended, and passed by Alilovic, but he threw the ball too hard against the ground, and it went over the goal.

- I'm really sorry, we had a chance to get a big point at the end, but obviously someone up there didn't want it. I hope it will come back in the following games against Slovan, Zagreb, and Velenje. Also, I believe this won't have a negative effect on us, but raise us, give us the will, the desire, and the power to take Celje where we plan to. It's the round of 16 of Champions League and the national titles. Nerves influenced our weaker start today, but when we pulled ourself together, we played really well and I was proud to be a part of the team - disappointed, but satisfied coach Vladan Matic stated.

- We gained self-confidence, proved to ourselves and to the others that we can be a match for Veszprem in their arena. I'm very disappointed we didn't manage to get a suspenseful end when we played goal for goal. That happens too often. Now we have three hard games and I believe luck will be on our side - Skube added.

These two weeks have a significant importance for Celje's complete season. Three difficult games series started the best way possible, defeating Slovan, their tenth consecutive win in the national championship. It was only a prequel for what's coming today, the Balkanian El Clasico, as the Celje's official page calls it.

- I'm sure we have a very difficult game this Saturday. We're facing a very motivated opponent, with a great selection of players, and amazing coaches. However, it's important for us to pay attention to our own game, and I believe that in front of the full Zlatorog's stands, with a smart game, with heart, and the max approach above our possibilities, we'll get the two points we want - coach Matic started the announcement, and continued to analyze the opponent:

- They have four or five experienced players and most of the best young Croatian players. They're a complete team, dangerous from every position. Valcic and Horvat's experience mean a lot for the defense, they have a young and experienced goalie, so I don't see a weak spot in their team.

Matic is aware of the importance of this game, even though he believes both teams will find their spot in the round of 16.

- Points from the match against Zagreb are definitely important in the battle for the third position, to go through to the round of 16. If we take an objective and realistic look, both Celje and Zagreb should go through. If any surprises happen, if Zaporozje surprises Veszprem or Zagreb or us in the away game, then things can get complicated. Every point is extremely important and that's the way we have to think about it before the game on Saturday.

Right before one of the most important games of the season, Zagreb's players are under quite a pressure. Their away games this season were far from ideal, from the torture against Borca, Lovcen, Vojvodina, to defeats against Meskov, Motor, and debacle against Lowen... Celje are backed up with the win against Motor, and Zagreb have to reduce it tonight. Coach Dvorsek's team only have the game against Motor left after Zagreb, and that one will decide the pass through of the group, which is their main goal this season. Tonight's match for the third position can bring a better lot in the second round, that is, it guarantees that other groups' winners will be avoided.

- The prediction is to give 120%, and what happens, happens. As for the outcome, our main goal is to pass through, and if it can happen with the third position, that would be better - Joso Valcic stated.

- Celje are young, enthusiastic, they run a lot. I think we have to be especially careful about the fast middle, they can create a lot of problems with it.

Even before the first game between the two, Zagreb warned about Celje's runs, and the game turned into a little war. The same thing should be expected today. The stakes are huge.

- It's a game that's been in our players' heads for a while now, and we'be been getting ready for it since Lowen. We're okay with the health, except Susnja is missing. I have to admit it messes with some of our plans, but the good news is that Obranovic and Sandrk are getting ready, and we can really count on them. Luka Stepancic got a nasty elbow hit in the back against Borca. His soft tissue was hurt. That's why he wasn't in practice yesterday. He's feeling better today, and we expect him to be ready for Saturday and the game against Celje. He might not be on 100%, but we definitely need him for the game, and he'll play - coach Dvorsek said.

- We're ready for the difficult game and a hell of an atmosphere. Max 6,000 Celje fans could be there, so they'll definitely have a big support. The fantastic 50 minutes against Lowen have to be copied and upgraded to 60 minutes.

Dvorsek pointed out middle back Skube, judging him to be Celje's best player, and he also praised the goalies, and the "good shooters Sliskovic and Zelenovic who go right into it and score 7-8 goals per game."

- Their biggest assets are incredible wings Zvizej and Marguc. They go for the fast middle, and the key of our win is to match that run. Our offenses have to be long, even if they're passive. We take a risk of being overrun and countered if we don't.

The situation with this game is clear, whoever wins comes very close to the placement into the round of 16, and whoever loses won't have a right to make a wrong step, or depend only on themselves. Both teams love a faster pace, push the fast middle, but the first game brought something completely different. Zagreb players responded to the Slovenian team's run, and the duel turned into the position war. Nothing different should be expected today, Dvorsek pointed out clearly that he wants long offenses no matter what the price, and to prevent Celje's transitions. Slovenian team went over this margin in only two games, away game against the fast Zaporozje, and at home against St.Petersburg. However, even then, they did it literally in the last seconds. Zagreb are much better defensively than the Russians are, and it's hard to expect the home team anywhere near 30 goals in a game this important.
