Gravelines - Limoges (80:68)

Alarms are going off for Gravelines, the battle for staying in the league is the topic of more and more conversations

We have to, ahead of this game, look back at the horrible events that took place in Paris last week one more time. Gravelines were about to lose again, but seven seconds before the time was up, when the score was 86-78 for Paris, players from both teams lost their temper and the situation on the court descended into chaos. The last seconds were never played, and the game and the result annulled for the time being. The Commission will decide on it later. Since Gravelines weren't heading for a defeat, this outcome is not bad for them, but, additional penalties will probably be awarded in this case. 

The Commission will meet right after Christmas. The initial decision was to suspend Williams and Ewig (Paris), and Diawara, Bokolo, and Akpomedah (Gravelines) for all championship games. With Diabate and M'Bay already injured, and Kennedy having left the club, that is a disaster for Gravelines. The only good news is, the decision to suspend Diawara was revoked, which means he can play.

Gravelines are on a 2-8, or 2-9 record, if the game is Paris is taken into consideration, they are at the bottom of the table, and the situation is grave. The Leader's Cup is lost, but the play off seems further and further away too. The game against Limoges today and the one against Cholet will be tough challenges, given the players at coach's disposal.

The situation is disastrous, but what's even worse, their game doesn't seem to be getting better. Even defense, which was their best game segment before, is now quite bad. They have been concedeing 80,3 points on average in the last seven games. Gravelines played the last Eurocup game last Wednesday, but they're going through to the next round anyway. 

It was very obvious they weren't really in the game, they've conceded 34 points in the first quarter only. 

- It was a good game, even though both teams had already qualified. We didn't open it very well, some players were injured, but we managed to get back in the game. We're still becoming the kind of team we want to be. Despite not being at the level we want to get at physically, I think we played well in the second and third quarter - coach Monschau said. 

He didn't rest his players, Diawara played for 32 minutes, Holland 29, Camara, Gray, and Holland between 23 and 25. That was not really expected, and they will play on a very limited roster today - 6 or 7 players. Lews, who was injured and didn't play against Zaragoza, should be back today. They are playing very powerful Limoges home today, who already beat some good teams on the road. 

- The players have to pick themselves up, and the younger ones should cease the opportunity. We have to stick together, and save the club - director Bedeleem said.

Let's just add that John Holland, who joined as a substitute for injured M'Baye, will stay in the club till the end of the season. He was scoring 13,5 points with 4,6 rebounds on average so far.

Limoges quickly got on the winning track only four days after the horrific defeat in Strasbourg. Chalon were not an easy opponent, their game improved lately, but Limoges won deservedly. They were in the lead throughout the game, but allowed Chalon to get things more complicated in the last quarter. Only six of Limoges' players scored, but four of them scored 18 or more points. The opponents were better in rebound (33-27), but good filed goal percentage (52%) was crucial for the win. Their efficiency for three-points was 12/26.

Limoges are one of the teams who won on Gravelines' court last year. This road game is perceptibly timed, given the problems the home team are experiencing. However, Limoges know that their situation and current position in the table will give the home team great motivation, and winning is never easy like that.

I have been think a lot about whether to go for a win by Limoges or an under by Gravelines. Both options are good and I believe both will go through but in the end I decided to go for an under by Gravelines. In the five home games this season they have never scored over 69 points and they can only win this through defense. They are here without four very important players, among whom is their top-scorer and a very important playmaker Diabate. Kennedy left the club, their power forward Lewis is not in a great condition but he has to play as the situation is drastic. Monschau has seven players at his disposal. Two days ago, Gravelines played in Zaragoza, they have worn themselves out and will pump up the pace here. Limoges have one of the best defenses in the league, regardless of the 180 points conceded in the last two games. This will be an additional motivation for the away team. Dupraz will pay special attention to Gravelines's players and I doubt Gravelines will get 75 points or more. The home team can only win a low-scoring game here.
