A traditionally tough away game for Lokomotiv

Lokomotiv have won only one of their last seven away games in Siberia, in their last game in February. The time zone difference affects all teams that come here, but Pashutin says his players have handled the flight well and want to impose their somewhat slower pace here

The Siberian Enisey open their new season with a game against the last year's finalists, Lokomotiv Kuban. After the team lead by Stevan Karadzic finished their last season right below the play-off line, an additional step forward was marked as a goal for this season.

Their activities this summer went in this direction as well. Enisey did not manage to keep their best foreign players but they did manage to keep their Russian axis that was improved with quality solutions from abroad. Dowdell, Jefferson, Rich will be replaced by Corey Fisher, Alex Renfroe and Christian Burns, while Hasan Rizvic will be replaced by Unica's Kosta Perovic. They brought players that should be able to surpass the results of last season.

- We have done a good job in the preparations. Our team will be much more energetic this season, we will put a lot of pressure on every opposing defense. The VTB league is one of the best in Europe and we give our best in every game - said Karadzic when announcing the new season.

Enisey played 11 pre-season games and won six of them. Interestingly, they played against a lot of teams from the Balkans (Mega Vizura, Crvena Zvezda, Siroki Brijeg, Igokea, Cibona, Cedevita), and beat Croatian champions Cedevita 83-74. One could see in the pre-season that Renfroe and Perovic will be important parts of this team, along with Kotishevski as the veteran leader of this team.

They are not facing an easy task in the opening match, even though they were often successful against Lokomotiv. The team from Krasnodar had not won this away game in the past three years (7 games in a row), but managed to end this series last season, which was their most successful season. Nevertheless, it was not easy, it ended 94-87 after Enisey lead by 4 points at half time.

- Lokomitv got the best result in the history of the club last season, they won the right of playing in the Euroleague. This is a very ambitious team. They have a very strong roster, some 12-13 players at the top level. However, they were stronger than use before and we still managed to beat them - said Karadzi and continued:

- This game will be very tough. A large number of absent foreign players will obviously influence it. Our opponents played the Gomelsky Cup with four strong players, including our former player Marcus Williams. The quality of our rivals has not changed and despite everything, I can guarantee our fans that the coaching staff and the players will do their best to win this game. 

Lokomotiv have already had a season-opener against Kalev at home. They played in accordance with the expectations, they did what was necessary to beat a weaker opponent. Pashutin's payer took this game very seriously and had a 20 point advantage by half time (44-24). The rest of the game was just a routine finish. 

- This was a very tough game for us, a season-opener, and we wanted to please our fans. We played great in the first half. Our shooting guards had some great assists, three of them had at lest seven assists. We were dominant in the paint as well - said Pashutin, who was not completely satisfied with his team's performance in the second half.

- We have to work more on not losing concentration. We were far too relaxed in the second half, we wanted to played attractive game and we had too many errors.

Lokomotiv ended their game with staggering 30 assists, which confirms Pashutin's statement about the good flow of the ball. Hendrix lead the team with 21 points (10/13), followed by Brown with only 1 point less.

- This was a good game, we showed a real team performance. I do not burden myself with how many points I scored, the most important thing is that the team won. Of course, we have to remain focused and avoid drops in our concentration which happened on several occasions in the second half - said Brown.

The defense was brilliant in the first half. Kalev stayed frozen on only 24 points but they scored twice as much in the second part of the game. Pashutin does not want to see this kind of relaxed attitude, much more difficult games are to come and this could prove to be very costly.

One such game is the one today. A very long journey to Krasnoyarsk (more than 3,000 kilometres) is never pleasant, they change a lot of time zones. This puts the players out of their usual rhythm and affects their end-game performance in a negative way. In addition, their head-to-head suggests Lokomotiv are used to having a tough day here. This may be the best Lokomotiv in the past several seasons but Enisey have done well in the pre-season as well. The negative run was ended last season mostly due to excellent Kalnietis who had 35 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds to produce one of the best games in the history of this league.

- Enisey will play their standard fast-paced basketball, they have Kosta Perovic who controls their defense. Renfroe and Fisher often go for penetrations and pass the ball to Christian Burns who has a great 3-point efficiency. Komorowski and Zavoruev are also very dangerous. The most important thing for us is to control the rhythm of the game, and this is always tough after a long flights. I can say that the lads have taken the flight rather well, they've adjusted well and they are prepared to impose their rhythm in the game - said Pashutin ahead of this game.

Enisey traditionally score a lot of points against Lokomotiv in Krasnoyarsk. They scored at least 80 points in their last 6 games, 78 in the game before that, and they will try to break down their opponents with fast pace. Pashutin does not want rush into anything, aware that this might reflect in the final moments in which Enisey's restedness might prove to be the crucial advantage.

Krasnojarsk is traditionally a difficult road game for all teams. Long trip and several different time zone changes crate problems for visiting teams and that is always felt at the end of games. But, we should make a difference between today's game and historical record between these two teams. Two years ago Lokomotiv were nowhere near as strong as they are today and off all their players only captain Bykov played in Lokomotiv prior to 2012. All other players came before the last season or before this one. There were some minor changes during the summer, the team trained together and this season they should be even better. They showed that in their first game when they easily defeated Kalev, even with slightly bad play in the second half. On the other side, Enisey changed most of their team and they will need some time to put together all the pieces. They showed that during the preseason when they lost against some teams from former Yugoslavia that are not as good as Eurocup champions. This is their first game and they will surely feel a certain dose of nervousness. Their only advantage is in the fact that Lokomotiv traveled far, but Pashutin said his players took the trip well and are ready to play a good game. Another thing that goes in the favor of this bet is that the rule which limited the number of foreign players allowed on the court at the same time has been revoked. This allows Pashutin to make any lineup he wants and the home team coach Karadzic is very well aware of that and I think this should be an easy win for the visitors.
