Kalev Cramo - CEZ Nymburk (78:82)

Nymburk without three very important players

  • Published:

Kalev was a firm opponent on the home court last season, limiting some strong Russian clubs to a small number of points. Nymburk will play without Simmons, Bend and Page, and the task ahead of them is not simple

Kalev started the new season with the most difficult test in the group. Lokomotiv Kuban are the second favorite of the whole competition, closely following CSKA. Playing away on their court will be a big thing to swallow even for far better teams. It would all have been solved in the first 20 minutes. Lokomotiv created 20 points advantage with a great defense (44-24), and only kept the difference for the rest of the game. Kalev picked themselves up in the second 20 minutes, mostly in the offense, and scored 50 points in that period.

Lokomotiv were expectedly dominant in the paint (50-28 in the under basket shots), but not many can pair Pasutin's team (Hendrix, Maric, Brown...) there. The trio we just mentioned scored 22/29 combined from the game, and scored the amazing 51 out of 88 points for Lokomotiv.

- I think we simply got scared by the opponent. Lokomotiv are a good team, we've seen them, but obviously we overestimated our own strength, and succumbed to the excitement. Second half-time was pretty good, but with that game we couldn't win the match. Unfortunately, it was lost in the first two quarters - Kalev's coach Kairys said.

Kalev didn't change a lot between the seasons, and we should see them much like we did last year. Their style of game shouldn't change, last year, Kalev were a quite an uncomfortable opponent on the home court, and opponents couldn't win with the offense. It should be noted that, in Estonia, Spartak were left with 71, Lietuvos with 73, UNICS with 70, and Khimki only 65 points, and those are great teams with their offense.

Nymburk created a new Czech championship. Their goal is the maximum result this season, and having in mind what we've seen in the first game, it's not impossible. Nymburk defeated Usti with 45 points advantage, with only 21+ at the half-time (41-20), in spite of the stress at the beginning, and a great number of lost balls.

However, their defense worked like a charm, and that will be one of major aspects of the game with Kemzura leading the way. Nymburk started pressuring as soon as Usti executed their play. It was often that four players offended rival team players, with only one player on each side on the other side of the court. Usti had a hard time creating open chances for the shoot, Nymburk dominated with their defense jumps and fast transitions, finishing plays in four or five seconds. It will definitely be quite different when they face a team of matching strengths, but this is an example of what we should be seeing in the Czech championship this season. Nymburk knocks out their opponents by 15-20 points even when they play away, so it's hard to see someone jeopardizing that.

- It was clear that this was the first game. Players who never played in the Czech championship saw how things were here. We could have had a bigger advantage after the first half-time, but we were limited by the number of lost balls. We tried to play fast, but we still don't have it in us - Hruban said after the game.

Today's game will be a much better indicator of what Nymburk can do. A lot stronger opponent will face them on the other side of the court, and they're really uncomfortable when they play at home. Kemzura will have additional headaches because of the injuries. Except for Benda, who will be away for a while because of his knee, Nymburk won't be using Dylan Page nor Chester Simmons. They didn't play on Monday, either. Even without these important players, Usti were defeated with 45 points difference. It only paints a picture of the difference in quality between Nymburk and the rest of the teams in the championship.

- Simmons will be away for 10 days, and Benda had to have arthroscopy and will be back to trainings in two weeks. It's similar with Page. There are problems with his meniscus, and he'll probably have to have an arthroscopy, as well - Rudolf Simecek, the general manager, stated.

Kalev play pretty tough on their home court, and Nymburk isn't faced with a simple task, either, especially when it comes to their absences. Lokomotiv scored 88 points on their home court, but with 57% (33/58) shoots from the game. Nymburk play fast in the national championship, but they have a different task here. Kemzura relies a lot on the defense, and this game should be decided with a bit smaller number of points.

The Czech champions have a tough job ahead of them today. Three of their important players will not be playing in Estonia, among them their best, Simmons. Kalev are a very tough team in their home court. In the nine home games they played last year, only Samara managed to go over this margin against them. They limited their opponents to 70 points or less in four games, with opponents such as UNICS and Khimki among those four. Although some changes took place in the summer, their style should remain the same, as proven by their games in their national league (86-50 and 68-51 wins), as well as their last few preparatory games, in which they managed to limit the very quick Riga team to only 73 and 78 points. Lokomotiv have huge offensive potential, and they scored 88 to Kalev on home court, but with an excellent 57% scoring percentage. During the last season Nymburk only passed this margin in away games with Neptunas and Riga, teams that prefer to play extremely quickly. The absence of the above mentioned three players will definitely be felt, as Simmons is the brains of the team, as demonstrated by his 27 points, 6 rebs and 7 assists vs Banvit. The games in the Czech championship should not be taken as a reference, as this is a whole different ball game. An extra bonus for the bet is the fact that these opponents are looking for a spot in the playoff, and they both need to win these games. I believe we will be seeing a hard game in which Kalev are not without a chance.
