Good defending will be the key for both teams

Home team coach repeated couple of times that aggressive defense is the base for solid results. TED scored only 60 points against them in Ankara, and similar scenario happened against Goverle in the domestic league. On the other side, Alba scored only 64 points against Nizhny last week and they were still unsatisfied with their defensive performance.

Khimik won against TED in Ankara and that puts them in a very comfortable position in the Eurocup. To confirm points won in that game, they must win against very unpredictable Nizhny.

Khimik started their pre-season very early, and they went through three different phases of the preparation for the forthcoming season. Coach Karlis Muiznieks had all of his players at disposal with Pustovy and Friemans being the exceptions (they played in the Eurobasket). They key thing for them was that Shuler and Delaney (USA-born forwards) looked really good in the pre-season and they adapted to the conditions in the new club very well.

Solid defending was the key for the victory against TED, and Muiznieks really improved that area of Khimik's game. They are now looking really good defensively, and they also know how to score points in the attack.

- Fighting spirit, will power, and determination are the keys for solid performance. Now we play two games per week and that leaves us no time to think about the past. We must work hard to win every duel, especially in thew Eurocup and when playing at home - Khimik's coach said.

Muiznekis is aware that the victory here would mean a world to them. Their opponents are struggling with injuries and that would be a great advantage for Khimki today.

- You always have to be very responsible when you are playing in the Eurocup. We have little time for the preparation, but same things stands for Nizhny, too. They have an excellent center, and they are a good team overall. But if we perform good defensively then we can win today - Khimik's captain Popov said.

Aggressive defending is something Muizneks insists since the beginning of the season, and the results are showing for Khimki. They won first two games in the domestic league, and before that they looked really good in the pre-season. Last Saturday they won against Goverla (60-60 in the regular time, 70-65 after the overtime) and after that they had three days to rest and to prepare for the next challenge.

Nizhny could be satisfied with the fact they proceeded to the Eurocup last week. Alba weren't the easiest of opponents, but it was clear Nizhny were the better team. Even the Nizhny's players admitted to the press after the game that they felt Alba can't really cause them any trouble on the court. That certainly won't be the case for them today. The away match against Khimki is a much tougher challenge, and with the win in the first game Khimki send a clear message to them.

Nizhny had reasons to be unsatisfied after the game against Lietuvos in the first round of the VTB league. They lost the match they really shouldn't have, and game in Estonia was their chance to redeem themselves to the fans. Lukic's players did exactly that although the coach himself wasn't very satisfied with the way his team performed. Nizhny completely dominated the game in the first half, and they were 21 points in front by the end of the half (53-32) but they were just awful in the third quarter and they allowed their opponents to make 19-0 series. In the end they struggled to secure their win, and they should really be worried with the fact they allowed their opponents to score 52 points in the second half.

- I am happy we won today, but I am unsatisfied with the way we performed, especially in the second half. Kalev were very aggressive, we weren't, and with that kind of performance we allowed them to get back in the game - Lukic said and then added:

- It was like two different teams played for us in the first and in the second half. True, there were some circumstances that didn't work in our favor and that is probably half of the explanation. Dmitryj Khvostov got injured and I still can't believe the judges didn't see that foul. Kalev's player hit Khvostov in the head very hard and it is possible he suffered the concussion. After he was carried out, we had only one playmaker in the roster, but Golovin collected two personal fouls very soon and I had to play Savelyev, a player I didn't plan to put on the court that day as he is still recovering from his injury. But, we were forced to make that kind of adaptations. There is a chance he got injured again and it is possible he is lost for the game against Khimki - Lukic said.

There is no information about Khvostov state available, and the same stands for Savelyev. If these two player don't recover in time, that would be a huge blow for Nizhny against Khimki. But, Dijon Thompson is the player who will certainly help his new team perform better. Last Monday he returned to the club he already played for in the past. Thompson scored the most points for Nizhny last season in the VTB league, he knows the way Lukic wants his teams to play, and he should have no troubles with the adaptation. But, unfortunately for Lukic, he won't be able to perform today.

Khimik proved to be a very good defensive team in the opening games of the season. On the other side, some Nizhny coaches and players told to the press they weren't really satisfied with the fact that they have allowed Alba to score 64 points against them. On the away match in Estonia we saw a much more offensive and efficient Nizhny, but that can be attributed to the way their opponents played that day. Today Nizhny should once again be focused primarily on the defense. They allowed Lietuvos to score only 70 points against them...

From the beginning of the season Khimik have been putting a lot of emphasis on defense, which clearly reflects on their results. A week ago they conceded 60 in Ankara, just as they did in regular time against Goverla this weekend. Nizhny are an unpredictable team. They could beat any team, but they could also easily lose against all of them. Interestingly enough, they usually adapt to the tempo of their opponents. In Estonia they played in a game that had a total of 170 points, while against Lietuvos the total was under 140 points. Today they will be up against a very aggressive home side that excels on defense, and I don't think that the total can go over the set margin.
