UNICS Kazan - Banvitspor (72:71)

Euroleague quality in a Eurocup game

  • Published:

The Turks are coming to this distant away game with three consecutive victories; the Russian team have had a solid start to the season as well

Kazan will be the venue for one of the most interesting games of this round. UNICS and Banvit form a duel of Euroleague quality, and both teams are good enough to go all the way in this competition. UNICS have once again put together a team that has every right to aim high, while Banvit have prepared a roster for the assault on the Euroleague prior to the season. Unfortunately they stumbled (Oostende) one step before the last obstacle, and continued their season in the Eurocup.

Trinchieri focuses a lot on the defense. After both Turow and Maccabi getting limited to under 70 points, Enisey broke through that limit on Saturday, but only because UNICS relaxed a bit in the last quarter. UNICS have slowly built up a lead over the course of the game, held a +14 lead going into last quarter, and calmly resolved the game in their favor. The fact Trinchieri is displeased after a comfortable victory only shows his perfectionist nature and the potential he sees in this team:

-We only played a normal game for 10 minutes, the starting 3 minutes of the game and 7 minutes in the third quarter. I'm upset, but a win is a win. We have a lot of work to do. I am not happy with our defense today, nor with the solutions of the players who were in the court.

UNICS have had a solid start this season, and regardless of his statement, Trinchieri can be pleased with the way his team is working, as UNICS have changed a lot prior to this season. There is definitely room to improve, but the fact that UNICS won three pretty easy victories even playing like this is definitely a reason for optimism on Trinchier's behalf. Wins are what counts at the start, and UNICS will surely improve as the season goes on.

Goudelock is proving to be the main player of the team with each new game. After scoring 22 in Israel, he scored a point more to Enisey, adding another six assists. He scored points in key moments, allowing his team to keep their lead.

Trinchieri once again mentioned defense in his post-game statement. He stresses defense much more than their offensive performance, which only speaks of his philosophy and the way UNICS are supposed to look like. The Russian team are up for a big challenge, as it seems that, after a few fumbles in the season opening, Banvit are finally in the right form, and want to give a proper performance.

-Banvit are a very good team. They are experienced, and they played the final of the Turkish League. They have a number of good players in their roster, among them Earl Rowland and Chuck Davis, Mejia and a number of good Turkish players. For sure, they are a very tough opponent, and there is no doubt for me that it will be a very tough game for us. It will be the first big game in our season. We need to improve and to pay special attention to the quality of our game, and of course we should keep concentration all the match long- said Trinchieri.

The Turks are coming to this distant away game with three consecutive victories, all three rather decisive ones. The opened in the Eurocup by demolishing Kalev, and then played a home game vs a much stronger Tofas, but that too was settled before halftime (51-30). The next half was a very strange game, and coach Dimitris Itsoudis commented that he has probably never in his life seen a halftime without a free throw. His team did not get a single free throw, and Tofas scored a few connected shots, mostly through Jure Balazic, getting them up to 72-64 prior to the last quarter. However, that was all they managed to do, as Banvit repelled their offense with quality defense and won the game with +16.

With this game in mind, it is important to mark the time spent in the game by each player. Nobody played more than 28 minutes, which is how much Rowland and Simmons spent in the game. They were also the most efficient, scoring 15 and 16 points, with Davis adding another 15. If we add Mejia with 14 to those three, we get a very balanced force. Banvit will struggle with the rotation of local players in the national championship, but there will be no such issues in the Eurocup, and they are rightfully looking for a victory today.

The crucial segment of the game will be the way Davis and Gordon manage to defend vs the tall line of UNICS led by Greek players. There is also Kuqo next to them. The Turkish team seems stronger on guard and forward positions, and that is definitely their chance.

I think that Banvit are pretty much underestimated here. They do have weapons to threat UNICS and perhaps even triumph in Kazan. UNICS have a major potential, but it's obvious that they aren't in the right place yet, which is understandable. Trinchieri puts emphasis on the defense, looking to make it the cornerstone of their success. On the other side, Banvit left their opponents at 80 or less points on a regular basis in the preseason, suffered a few blows at the start of the season, but they have improved recently and limited their opponents to lower scores. I doubt they will be looking to push up the pace in today's game, they didn't do that against Turow and Maccabi, they went to higher figures against Enisey, but the Siberian team showed their preferred style against Lokomotiv. I expect a more even game than the odds suggest. If UNICS get an easy win, it will be thanks to good defense rather than efficient offense.
