CSKA Moscow - Nanterre (72:60)

Nanterre facing a tough challenge without Gladyr

  • Published:

The Ukrainian player could miss all games until the end of the year. On the other hand, Moscow are getting Krstić back

At the start of the season, CSKA underperformed  constantly. Their individual quality and mental fortitude allowed them to win the games against weaker opponents, but Fenerbahce and Barcelona are too good teams not to take advantage of that. After 4 rounds, CSKA had a 2-2 score and a tough situation ahead of Partizan's arrival.

The Begrade team paid the price for CSKA'a poor performances in the first few games. The Moscow team played arguably their best game this season as they defeated Partizan by 42 points and got a very convincing triumph. It all worked well for Messina's team and defense was particularly impressive.

- We must not forget that injuries to Partizan's leaders had an effect on their game. At the same time, we have done everything right, we defended well, closed down the paint, pressured their shooters. On the other end of the pitch we had good flow of the ball which resulted in high shot efficiency. A very important fact was the number of fans, their support is very important to us. We will continue working hard and winning, I hope - commented Messina after the game.

- We've made serious preparations, we knew this game was very important for us, especially after the defeats against Fenerbahce and Barcelona. We had five days to prepare and we used them productively. We got closer to Top 16 , and all 12 players fought great - added Fridzon.

Their goal ahead of today's game is ton continue in the same rhythm. The situation is similar to that before the Partizan game, as CSKA didn't play a game in the VTB league and had plenty of time to prepare. In addition, they didn't waste time on travelling which is why we may expect them in full force today.

- Our opponents have played well at home. They're athletic, they have good leaders, they insist on playing their style of the game. We are coming after a very good game in which we found our chemistry and played well. We want to continue the same way and go to Top 16 - said Messina who won't be able to count on Zozulin but will have Krstić at his disposal.

Nanterre have been one of the most pleasant surprises in this competition so far, and they gave the Muscovites a pretty hard time at home, as CSKA had to fear for their points until the very end. It seemed then that the result was a st of various circumstances but Nanterre showed quality in the rest of the season and proved that they are a team to be taken seriously. In addition, Fenerbahce had major problems with them for 35 minutes and broke the French resistance only in the final moments of the game.

Nanterre's defeat in Istanbul last week put them on 2-3, but they still have realisti chances to get into Top 16 . The games against Partizan at home and Budivelnik in Ukraine will be crucial, even though the French team will not give up lightly in other games as well. The hardest test is ahead of them as CSKA in full form are certainly the best team of this group.

- I think the first part was pretty positive. Two wins are a great accomplishment against such competition, especially since we're still in the game for Top 16. I feel that opponents have started to take us very seriously after our win in Barcelona, which was not the case when Partizan beat us by -30 - said  Jeremy Nzeulie.

Nanterre imposed themselves in the first few games through excellent defense. Apart from the away game in Istanbul against the very efficient Fenerbahce, they have not conceded over 73 points in any game, much like in their domestic league.

- It is true that Nanterre used to be an offensively-minded team, but we realized that we have to play defense if we want to win titles and this made the difference in the play-offs last season - added Nzeulie.

Coach Donnadieu's players traveled to Moscow after an important win over Orleans in the league. It was a direct clash for the first place, and Nanterre triumphed through a late comeback. Orleans were, surprisingly, in the lead for the best part of the game, and Nanterre were particularly inefficient in offense (only 40 points in the first 30 minutes). However, the champions woke-up near the end and a run of 10 points turned the game for them.

- For the first time since the season started I felt major fatigue in the team. We struggled a lot, we were late in our reactions, we didn't make the right calls. During the first 3 periods, we mostly fought ourselves. But, it was much better at the start of the last quarter, Judith was very important tonight he was the heart and soul of this team - said Donnadieu after the game as he also praised Deshaun Thomas (20 points) and Will Daniels (15 points).

The bad news for Nanterre is that their Ukrainian player Gladyr got injured, and he could be gone from the court until New Year. Gladyr (11,7 points, and 4.5 rebounds in the league, 6.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in the Euroleague) is one of the crucial players of this team and I'm sure his absence would make Nanterre's job much harder. Donnadieu won't have problems with too many foreign players in the lague games, because he can use his full squad without Gladyr in the LNB games. However, this was not the outcome he hoped for.

- It seems that he injured his meniscus and we could be without him until the end of December. We know Sergej is a player who gets injured a lot. He's a great player but he gets these minor injuries often and he rarely played a full season in Spain - said Donnadieu.

Lighty's comeback increased the competition in the team and Gladyr's absence will be somewhat easier to make up for. Nanterre have had four days to recover after the game against Orleans and it will be interesting to see how they're doing in physical terms. Without maximum fitness Nanterre don't have much to hope for against CSKA as a game against them requires a lot of energy. The first game was quite a war zone as it only had 121 points and CSKA will try to push for something similar today. Partizan didn't find a solution last week and Nanterre will have a massive challenge ahead of themselves.

- The element of surprise is gone and without Gladyr we are expecting a game against a very focused team, just like in Belgrade - said Donnadieu.

CSKA should be able to establish an even bigger dominance in the paint with Krstić's comeback and Nanterre's job will be extremely tough. If the Russian champions enter the game in full force and pressure their back court, Nanterre are in for a real tough one. The first game, in which CSKA were well below their best, showed that Nanterre had to work very hard to earn every point and this could be even more prominent now. Partizan got only 46 points last week and this should be a message for the French.

Judging by what both teams have shown this season, we could see another low-figure game. The first game in France ended with 121 points and CSKA should do better in offense but they probably won't score over 80 points. Nanterre have proved to have a solid defense this season, they allowed over 80 points only in Istanbul last week with 25 by Fenerbahce in the last quarter. Fenerbahce are more offensively minded than CSKA and the Muscovites have allowed 86 in their away game. Nanterre will have a tough job in offense without Gladyr and CSKA are going into this game with maximum rest, the game in France was the best warning for Nanterre's capabilities. When CSKA's defense is at a top level then opposition stays well below 60 like Partizan last week. CSKA's home games this season - apart from Partizan, the opposition were all offensively minded teams and only Riga managed to get the game to 143 points. It should be the same today as Nanterre without Gladyr will have a hard time going over 62-63 points and CSKA went over 80 points only against Azovmaš (83) and Partizan last week. I expect a result along the lines of 75-55 or 75-60, and definitely not more than 35 points per quarter.
