UNICS limited Donetsk to 48 and 63 points last season

Kazan club have a lot better defense than they did last year, and as the season goes on, their offense is getting better, too. Riga were left -47 this week, even though that game didn't mean anything to UNICS

UNICS seem more powerful as the season goes on. They were crushing the opponents at the beginning with a rock solid defense, but it was obvious they weren't doing their best offensively. It seemed that the defeat in Estonia came in the right moment, because UNICS picked up their game to a whole new level since that. They kept the intensity and aggressiveness in the defense, while the offense started functioning. The result were the triumphs in the difficult away games in Turkey and Czech, and the demolitions at home against Spartak, Kalev, and Riga. 

UNICS started the game against Riga with a secured first position in the Eurocup group, but with a questionable motivation. However, on the court, we've seen a team that play their best, and it was hard to decide which team didn't care about the result, and which team did. With all the difference in quality, the ratio of strength in that situation is clear. UNICS played their best from the first to the last minute, and that can best be seen on the results in the final period, 30-8. 

- I reminded the players that we are professionals before the game, and that means play our best and go for the win in every game, no matter if it's important or not. We've secured the first position of the group already, but that didn't mean we can be relaxed in this game. We played well throughout the whole 40 minutes, and I'm glad I was able to give every player a chance - Trinchieri said after the game.

The mood in the locker room is fantastic, and UNICS can be very optimistic about the rest of the season. The second round of the Eurocup is secured, UNICS imposed themselves as the favorites for winning that competition with the way they're playing, and they also hold the first position of the VTB group. Today's win against Donetsk would allow them to keep the advantage against their rivals half way through the regular part. Considering the games they showed in the last few weeks, it would be a huge surprise if it didn't happen. 

Donetsk have a very good week behind them. Last weekend, they won against the mighty Lokomotiv in the VTB League, and strengthened their position at the top of the group (5-3), and they also won in the national championship this week. 

With this win, Donetsk made up for the defeats against the Krasnodar club in the round of 16 of the playoffs last season. Last Sunday, they were a better opponent, had McCauley (25 points) in the mood, and he lead the team, but it wouldn't be fair to leave out anyone. The win happened thanks to the team play that limited Lokomotiv leaders, and one of the key segments was the jump prevalence (36-26).

- We've defeated a very strong team thanks to the team work and a great defense. You don't need to be motivated against teams like Lokomotiv. McCauley showed a great defense performance for the second game in a row, and the bench brought the extra energy - coach Plekanov said after the game. 

The series of positive results will hardly continue in today's game. UNICS are a much better team at the moment, and they will put to test all the offensive potential Donetsk have to offer. These teams faced each other last season, in the same group, and UNICS easily won, conceding 63 points in Donetsk, and only 48 in Kazan. UNICS are even better in the defense today.

UNICS are back on track offense vise and destroying their opponents. They struggled with scoring at the beginning of the season, but as the season progressed, their offense is looking better. The defeat to Kalev seems to have happened at the right moment - UNICS started doing great after it, home especially. Spartak managed to score only 49 points, and lost by 34 points in the end. Kalev scored only 44, lost by 50, Riga scored 51, lost by 47...The last game against the Latvian champion was particularly impressive. It was perhaps their most important game of the season, while it had no greater importance for UNICS. However, UNICS showed great professionalism and gave their best. Donetsk are just as good as the three aforementioned teams, and last season's games proved they might have a lot of problems. They are a primarily offense oriented team, and when someone manages to stop their offense, problems occur. The game against Lietuvos in Ukraine a month ago was a great example of it. UNICS certainly have the ability to stop Donetsk in Kazan. Donetsk conceded 86, 104, and 84 points in the three road games. I expect UNICS to be in a good state today, I expect them to score over 80 points, and Donetsk won't have as much opportunity in offense to stay under 10 points short. I think we'll see another convincing win for UNICS.
