Riga - CSKA Moscow (84:88)

CSKA playing in Riga without Kaun only 48 hours after a tough game in Krasnodar

  • Published:

Muscovites won two games after the overtime last week. They haven't been brilliant this season, but they're winning. Riga won the last five home matches (both the Eurocup and VTB), and conceded over 77 points in none

Riga set the VTB play-offs as their main goal in the international competitions. They ended their European road in a difficult group of the Eurocup with UNICS, Banvit and Maccabi Haifa. Things are going according to plan in the VTB, Riga are currently on the high fifth position. However, as it's been pointed out more than once, the differences between the teams are really small, and beside Himki and CSKA on top, everyone is 2-3 wins away from each other, and it'll be tight till the end.

Riga had a few exams in the national championship between their last game in the Eurocup and today's match against CSKA. They passed all of them with flying colors, and they continue to dominate in their country, as expected. The Latvian champion reinforced the roster for the rest of the season, and brought the young Latvian star, point guard Ingus Jakovics, who had a noted role in the European championship under the age of 20 (13,6 points) where Latvia got the silver medal. The second reinforcement is Rihard Kuksiks, who came from the Ukrainian Budivelnik.

- It's nice to play again, to be on the court, I'm glad because of the opportunity in Riga. The team have a good chance to get through to the play-offs, but the main goal remains winning the Latvian championship - Kuksiks pointed out. He's still not in his best shape:

- I probably won't be completely ready in the first games, I've got to get in shape. I should be fully contributing in a few weeks.

The new duo should play today, and they couldn't have picked a better debut. One of the strongest European teams in the last seasons are coming to them.

- CSKA have a lot of great players, but the goal is always to win. We can get that only if we fight for every ball and play like a team, not as individuals. They have to feel this is not their court - Kuksiks pointed out.

The Top 16 opening brought the away game in Krasnodar for the Muscovites. It was a first Russian duel in the history of the Euroleague, and considering the quality of the teams, it obviously gained a lot of attention. We've seen a very interesting game where the Muscovites got the win after the overtime, a second one in only four days and a triumph against Neptunas.

The game had two different half-times. The first one brought the offensive festival, completely unexpected, great shot percentages on both sides, and 85 points. However, as the game went on, the defenses started dominating, and in the last 15 minutes of the regular time, and the overtime, we've seen a true trench fight. CSKA had a chance to win without the overtime, but Likodej scored the three-pointer for an even result.

- It's been a great game, and Lokomotiv are very good. They created problems with their pick-and-roll game in the first half-time, and the offensive jump. We managed to adjust in the second half-time. However, if you look at the stats, you'll see how much effort we had to invest: we had 50% three-pointer shots, 24 assists, 106 team efficiency. Even with numbers like those, the win didn't come easily - Messina stated.

CSKA weren't brilliant, once again, but they found a way to win in the end, and that's what big teams do. Despite dominating the games against each other, Krasnodar had an extremely difficult away game. Lokomotiv are growing from year to year, confirming themselves as the top class European team, and they could easily go through to the quarterfinals of the Euroleague, so this win is a huge success. The Friday game was one of the CSKA's best ones offensively this season, they had good solutions for the home team's defense for the most part of the game.

Five players had two- digited number of points, and the amazing Hrjapa should be pointed out, he scored 15 points (5/6), had eight jumps and seven assists. He lead the team as the captain. Teodosic was the best striker with 16 points, but with 4/13 from game, unnecessary forcing in some moments. Just like against Neptunas, CSKA had some problems with the jump (42-38, the offensive jump 10-1 for Lokomotiv). It's partly Kaun not playing, who was left to train with an individual program because of the minor injury.

They didn't have much time to rest. Only about 50 hours after the exhausting game, the Muscovites have the away game in Riga. They obviously went to Riga straight from Krasnodar.

- It won't be simple, we're playing right after the difficult battle in Krasnodar, and we're also without Sasa Kaun. Riga are a very organized team who have versatile offenses. We have to defend against the pick-and-roll well, and be aware that they're one of the league best teams when it comes to the jump - Messina stated.

CSKA don't seem convincing at the beginning of the season at all. They came to Riga straight from Krasnodar, only 48 hours after a tough game in the Euroleague. This will be a third game for the Muscovites this week, they won the first two in the overtimes. They had problems with the Neptunas, and got away in the last seconds, but after the fight in Krasnodar, they surely aren't rested. Riga won the last five games at home, and played a few championship games during the break, so they boosted their self-confidence. They also brought two reinforcements and seem a lot better than they did at the beginning of the season. Last year, CSKA won both games with eight points difference, and they celebrated with +17 at the opening of the VTB league. However, then, we were looking at a pretty evened fight for the full 30 minutes, Riga lost it in the final moments. In that game, Kaun dominated with 27 points, but he's out today because of an injury. Considering all of this, Riga are ready to give Muscovites a very hard time. The Muscovites won with more than 11 points difference in only 2 out of ten away games this season (Azovmas +14, Samara +17).
