Sato: We have to play better defense than in recent games

Only a win will take a team to the next phase. It would be a disaster for Perasović to crash out of the first stage while they were one of the title contenders ahead of the season

One of the most interesting games in the last round of Eurocup's regular part is played in Valencia where the home team and the French ASVEL will decide on the second spot in the group in a direct clash. Valencia are coming into this game with one win more but ASVEL won the first game and the second win would see them through on account of better head-to-head score.

At the start of the season, nobody and not even coach Perasović thought they would have to secure their progress in the last round in a group like this. There are no more calculations and no more chances to fix things - Valencia are playing their Eurocup game of the season. A win would put them in round 2 where they would face UNICS, Oostende and the sixth-placed team in Euroleague Group C, and the way things are, that will be Polish Stelmet. But more on that in the days to come as the French are the main focus these days as they suffered a relatively convincing defeat against them in Lyon, certainly more convincing than suggested by the 76-79 scoreline.

- Defense will be the key today. We have been weak in the past four games and we can fix that today. We cannot allow opposition to come here and get 100 points. I hope we can fix some things - said their forward Romain Sato.

- Jackson is one of the top scorers in Eurocup but we can't just focus on  him, we have to play as a collective. We can guard him well and then the rest can bombard us. He's a good player and I hope we can reduce his contribution to this game.

Knowing Perasović, Riba will be an ideal option to guard Jackson.

They've had major defensive problems against Murcia on Saturday. They conceded 86 points and put a seemingly settled game at risk. They had a 53-35 lead at the break, and Perasović later said this was a good lesson but it is important they still won and remain right behind Real whom they are playing this weekend. 

Dubljević lead the team with 22 points and it is important to note that Perasović made many rotations bearing in mind the game today. They will have a new player in this game. Pečerov's short-term contract has expired and he left and the new name is forward/power forward Luboš Barton. He has arrived mainly due to injuries to forward Lučić and wing forward Aguilar in order t help Sato, Doellman and Dubljević, even though he will probably not get too much time on the court today.

ASVEL traveled to Spain with 3 consecutive defeats in which they had an average of only 63 points per game. Last week, they suffered two home defeats, one against Paris in an unimportant Eurocup game and then a much more important league game against Le Mans. This was a typical ASVEL game when they stand up to a defensively oriented team - tough, low-scoring. ASVEL were far behind by the break (27-44) and unlike the home game against Roanne a few weeks ago, they didn't manage to threaten Le Mans and get a comeback.

- Le Mans caused a lot of trouble for us tonight and we had no answer. We were without several players, Thomas (Larroquis) is injured, Marko (Kešelj) is coming back after the injury, Amar (Sy) is not well. We lacked energy and efficiency - said Vincent and added:

- We're in a difficult period and you need the support in the difficult moments and not when you have a 20-point lead. Therefore, I will support my team and they have to understand that we have to stand united and go through this period. The team is worn out, tired, and we have to do our best, we have to mobilize and react.

The situation in the league is not the best, their 4-7 score puts them pretty far away from the Leader's Cup. They only have 4 rounds to go before the break and two games played this weekend will largely determine the end result. ASVEL are facing the most important week in fall season, and before the mentioned games against Antibes and Paris they have a crucial Euro game in Spain.

It will not be easy as Valencia are very strong team especially at home, regardless of their recent defeats. They are faced with a potential debacle as they were considered as one of the favorites to win this competition and absolutely no one could imagine them crashing out in the first stage. ASVEL will definitely have to play top-level defense, and stop Valencia's fast transition as the have very little chance in a high-scoring affair. At this point, Vincent's players don't seem to play a high-scoring game...

- I expect the team to react. We believe in a win but we have to do better - said Edwin Jackson.

- We are currently not in the best of periods, but we have to give our best. We will see whether it brings us the result we want but we have to do our best - added Paccelis Morlende.

Valenciahave been having many problems with organizing their defense lately as emphasized by Sato, one of the crucial defenders. In previous seasons, Valencia had similar "life or death" games against ASVEL. And they were always up to the task. They often left their rivals at 60 points and today they will bite from the first minute to the last and there will be no relaxation unless they are up front by 30 points and that is not too realistic. ASVEL's last three games have been very poor- they scored 56 against Le Mans, 61 against Dijon, 72 against Paris....I believe they will not get too much out of their game today as well. In Ribas, Valencia have a man who can stop Jackson and that's half the job you need to do to stop ASVEL.
