Pesaro - Dinamo Sassari (77:82)

Pesaro without enough players for training sessions

  • Published:

The home team are extremely short on players, with the coach complaining that he cannot carry out normal training. The tempo Sassari have could be deadly for the home team

Pesaro opened the championship with a surprising victory over Avellino. They lined up four losses after that, and the last one was vs Montegranaro.

Their duel was another one of those games where defense was secondary, but this time Pesaro scored less than their opponents. The end result was 95-90, with a particularly high scoring tally in the last period (32-35), which was the key to their defeat.

Although they opened the game badly and were behind by ten points, they turned the game around by halftime, and ended the first half at +5. The lead switched sides a few times in the second part of the game, they had +4 with two minutes remaining, but the home team played better in the final moments and that is all.

The width of the roster was a big problem for them as coach Dell Agnello rotated only seven players, with most spending more than 30 minutes on the court, so fatigue took over. Backs Turner (15pts, 7rbs) and Young (16pts, 7rbs) played best, while Anosike (14pts,
11rbs) did a great job under the rim.

-Although we lost, I am happy with the way we played. We could not have normal training with only nine people, this is the way things are for us. Defense is not doing well, but I have to repeat, we cannot train it well either in training- said the worried Dell Agnello, who touched upon their game with Sassari:

-Yet another game we're predicted to lose by something like +20. You never know, we will do our best to stop them, though  in my opinion they have the best perimeter setup in the league. The Diener brothers and Marques Green all have great perception, they are extremely fast and score a lot. Our offense is a lot weaker, and we must focus on defense.

After losing to Cremona and Cedevita, and bad performances on the offense, Sassari went back on their old paths and buried their opponents' basket in their next two games. Their first shot at redemption was a championship game vs Varese. The started furiously and decided the outcome of the duel by halftime. They only increased their lead in the remaining time, for the final 105 points, and Caleb  Green entered the league record books by scoring 45 points.

Back in their home court, they hosted the Belgian Charleroi in a game of great importance for the team from Sardini. That obstacle fell easily as well, although they were only up by +2 at halftime. They decided the game in the third quarter for the final score of 94-78. Green did not repeat the fantastic performance he gave vs Cremona, but still greatly helped his team with 19 points and 9 rebounds, while Drake Diener led the scorers with 23 points and six three-pointers.

They will be looking for their first away win in Pesaro, and coach Sacchetti thinks they will get it too:

-If we play a good game, we will win. We had two bad performances in away games so far, but after them we figured out what we had to do. The game vs Pesaro is very important to us, we need to have the right approach and we will win it. We cannot allow ourselves to think we will win easily, their ranking does not reflect their quality.

After a surprise victory over Avellino, Pesaro lined up four losses (Caserta -9, Cantu -15, Siena -25, Montegranaro -5). Coach Dell'Agnello has a very small roster, playing with practically only two substitutes, and has to send juniors to play when it gets rough. His statement that they cannot train normally due to lack of players speaks of the gravity of the situation. Such a schedule is difficult even in normal circumstances, and today won't be normal, as the away team are Sassari, with their ultra fast-paced basketball. Pesaro are weak on defense, and Sassari are extremely potent on offense, confirmed by games in which they scored over 100 points. Coach Sachetti points out that this is an important game as they suffered two away losses so far, and he is aware of the importance of such games. Sassari easily won their last two games, and today they have a great chance to continue the streak. One thing is certain: when Sassari win, they win decisively, making this handicap a great option.
